Welding up my axle tubes?

I am going to be building my rear end this weekend.

I have read about people welding up their axle tubes and was wondering if I should do this. If so is there any special technique that needs to be used to weld them up? I need all the details please. Is there anything else I should weld up, or prep for this build?

No special technique that I know of, just basic prep as with any other welding. Make sure the paint on the tubes is sanded off and the welding surface is clean, paint the fresh welds after. I would weld up the upper torque boxes, if you haven't already done so now that the diff will be out of the way. Good luck, let us know how it turns out.

Well I am going to have a guy I work with Weld up the axle tubes for me, I don't know much about welding. He was asking if it needed to be stick welded, and what size stick, or some other type of welding.

As far as the torque boxes go, I have a welder at my house, and I could probally get my dad to do this, anything Special I would need to know about welding up the torque boxes?

I'm not going to BS you, I am no expert welder either. Hopefully someone with welding experience will come in and have some better advice for you. My muffler guy welded up my SFCs, torque boxes and axle tubes, he was using a stick welder but I do not know what size stick.

I used a mig for my torque boxes. When you weld up the axle tubes try to keep the heat down. I would weld an inch on one side and cool it off, then an inch on the opposite side , then top, bottom, etc. (cooling in between) till you're done. That way it'll pull as heat is applied and try to equalize it against the opposite weld as much as possible.

Personally, I like mig because you don't get quite as much heat.

I believe when mine were done it was done with a TIG. I am not a welder by any means, but I think it had to do with different types of matierials between the pumpkin and tubes.

You can use either. A weld is a weld. It's just all a matter of heat. Stick Welders can get hot, but a lot of an adjustment on it so you can turn down the power. I do a lot of welding with a stock welder and small rods.

I'm sorry i can't tell you which one i used though and how much power. It's just something i do by "feel" if ya know what i mean.
