Just so everyone here knows, even "computer experts" have some nice crashes once in a while. (Notice the quotes).

I have no idea what happened, but yesterday explorer kept crashing. And tonight I turned on my laptop, and got the great blue screen of death right on startup. (Something you hardly see with XP). I rebooted into Linux, and everything checked out, so I knew I didnt have a hardware problem.

So, after trying the 15 or so tricks in the recovery console, and registry backups, and all the other stuff I know to try to put the paddles to XP and revive it, I am letting it die. Luckily I have everything but a few files backed up, and I am in Knoppix right now (something I've recommended before) copying the files over so I can do a reinstall.

But yeah, you guys can all point and laugh at me now. Another plug for Knoppix tho. I put the CD in, booted up, and have access to all my drives and partitions, and it connected right to the internet, I did nothing more than boot up. I can fix what's wrong, or at least retrieve my files before I reinstall.

If you haven't yet, Download Knoppix and burn a CD, and keep it around just in case. Thats what I did, and now I'm really thankful for it. This way you can at least retrieve your stuff before reinstalling everything.

You know, I have always wanted to play with Linux, but my only experience was with Linspire and I didnt care for it. THe main turn off for me when it comes to Linux is that there are so many versions its hard to tell what you want to try. Even with your link for example, it takes you to a FTP page with 100 downloads. No explainations either, just gotta download it, burn it, and try it. If they explained it a bit more it would be easier to decide.

Knoppix is a bitch to write to ntfs partition drives though. But in respect for a temporary OS it rules.
