Wet Sand Possible Oops!

It's been a while since I've been on these boards. Had to register again because my email is new. Anyway I tried to get rid of a surface scratch on my bumper by doing a bit of wet sanding with 2000 grit wet sander paper. I don't think I sanded all the way through the clear because the silver metallic looks fine but it does look like a small circle in the area I sanded.. I'm wondering if I should try to fix on my own or take it to a shop. If it's not through the clear yet and there is an obvious spot will it need repainting or just clear?

Hard to tell if you are through the clear or not. You could try bugging it a little to see if it shines back up. Worst that could happen is that the bumper still needs to be re-cleared when you are done.

Stopped by a local place and he says it's through but the metallic paint seems to be fine. Still needs a whole redo according to the shop. I need some other stuff painted too so I guess I'll just bite the bullet. Oh well and thanks for taking a look.

Isn't that piece plastic??? I'd have masked it off, rattle canned some verithane on there, and called it a day.

BTW... Sandpaper is RARELY the answer to fixing a visible scratch. Now ya know.

Yeah I know that now and I kind of knew it as I was stupidly doing it. It was dumb. I'm getting the car in shape so I can enjoy it for another couple of years before I sell it for a new Mustang.

I did the same thing on the door of my F250.A week after i got it, sombody decided to key both pass doors.I was able to get most of it out, but thought i could make it a little better and right through the clear.I got into the metallic and had to repaint the door.

I'm probably going to have the bumper fixed in a couple of weeks. Expensive lesson learned.

I know this post is a lil old but it sounds to me you just didn't buff it well enough, as a painter if you didn't have any of the actual base color on the sand paper you should be fine. 2000 grit usually takes forever to go through the clear coat even for factory clear

Nevermind jus seen the pic yeah that's deff a paint repair and no more buffing required.
