What are the symptons for a blown head gasket?

This combination of clicking/popping noise and always smelling anti-freeze is leading me to believe something else is wrong with my car?

clicking poping is not somthing i would expect too hear. but there is no way too tell what is causing that.

signs of a blown head gasket. ( not in any order of how common each smyptom is)

1. loss of coolant with no external leaks.
2. low compression in one or more cylinders
3. coolant in oil
4.seepage of coolant at corners of the cyl head and block
5. shooting coolant out of the tail pipe!!! ( i diaged a 94 sable 3.8 that did that while running!! it SHOT coolant out of the exhaust and still ran that one got a whole new motor
6. combustion gasses in coolant ( there is a tester out there for this)
7. presure test and pull a plug out and see coolant on the plugs ( would have too be a massive leak for this too happen.

there are more too. but i got tired of listing them

i would by one of those test kits form autoparts shouldnt be more than 10 or 15 bucks i wouldnt think

I blew a head gasket on my 71 Camaro and it blew steam out the exhaust. It will start to run like crap too.

from my experience, if you wanna know if your head gasket is blown. Just open the rediator cap , fill it up with coolant. and see are there any air bubbles. constant bubbling will show in the radiator will show that you got a blown gasket

yes a real bad case of a blown head gasket can do that.

I'll go one further than that and tell you to pull a plug and pressure test each cylinder one at a time with some high pressure air down each one of the spark plug holes (run the end of your air nozzle into a cork or rubber stopper for a flask and put jam it into the threads so the air can't blow back on you. It's a little easier to pinpoint and more accurate than just running the engine and looking for bubbles. Make sure both valves in the head are closed at the time though, or you'll just end up blowing it out the intake or exhaust track.
