what are your thoughts on a '92 5.0L Cougar engine

just as the title says, the reason why i'm getting it is because it comes complete oil pan to intake and all accesories. it looks similar to the '94-'95 GT engine. The good thing about it is that its an HO motor and not only that but it may come with forged factory pistons. the car was built on 7/92 which is borderline for the last of the '92 5.0L motors that were the last year with forged pistons. the odometer on the car reads 140K miles, but i plan on doing a basic rebuild with 8-10psi in mind from a junk yard Twin turbo setup. I'm looking to spend no more than 500 including the cost of the motor.

I thought the cougar/tbird 5.0s were non-HO. Maybe I am wrong though.

That engine is all but sure to have gotten hypereutectic pistons from the factory. It is basically like any 5.0HO of it's era though. Good luck with it.

thats why with some luck it MAY have forged pistons because Ford stopped using them for the '93 up engines. this is a 7/92 car, so its border line, i'll find out when i take it apart Hope the pistons have TRW on em

It is the same engine that is in our mustangs. Being built in 7/92 i am guessing that you are going to have hyper pistons. But like you said it is right on the line where they were changing over.

As I recall, Ford stopped using forged pistons in April of 1992 for all 5.0HO engines.

don't worry about the damn pistons. plenty of people run hyper's and boost, just be careful, and don't get greedy

It should. There is no reason that I can think of that Ford would change wiring for the same engine.

thats the thing... i know i will get greedy and would want to push it to between 12-14psi.

i went back to the junk yard to pick up the motor, but i instead came home with one off an '89(build date 12/88)LX hatch, it was an automatic and still had the air silencer, i'm hoping it wasnt beat to death, the reason why it was in the yard was due to front end damage(sideways). the odometer read 69k, not sure if its 169 or just 69 interior was in great shape so i'm hoping for 69, but either way i dont think the motor was taken past 5k rpms in its life. i bought the long block and intake along with fuel lines and TB. i'm gonna tear it down and rebuild it hopefully not needing to be bored out so i can use the stock pistons and just get some new rings/bearings.

i'm thinking about getting an 87 cougar, COMPLETE just for the motor and rebuilt tranny for my car since I have no motor lol

if the price is right go for it... theres plenty of 5.0L engines in cars around these junk yards, but most are non HO, the one off the '89 lx i got and the one on that cougar are HOs, i payed 150 for the long block with intake, tb, and fuel lines. I removed the intake manifold tonight and didnt see any sludge in the lifter valley so that tells me the motor saw relative regular oil changes, i'll see what the bottomend looks like probably tuesday in my automotive class, tomorrow i'll be down in Buena Park for the Fabulous Fords Forever show at Knotts

You are lucky you have such choices. There isn't a 5.0 HO in all of southeastern michigan junkyards.

91-93 T-birds and cougars came with the 94-95 Mustang version of the 5.0 HO.
