Replace 03 IRS axel bearing without a press??

Gonna reuse this thread for the next bearing question: Can this bearing be removed and installed without a press? Perhaps a balljoint type tool could work? Anyone have experience?

OLD QUESTION: Ok, so I just bought an 03 IRS for my thunderbird but the drivers side bearings are shot (if I grab a lug and pull, the whole 'hub' moves within the upright). I tried rock auto and the autozone website but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for. Anyone know where I find these bearings? Also, does anyone know of a good instruction guide or should I get a shop manual for the 03 Cobra? Thanks

BTW: realized I had the manual all along, didn't know the cobra was included in my software!

As for getting IRS parts try calling Steve at Tousley Ford. He advertises ALL Ford OEM parts for 10% over cost and he'll look up whatever you need. 1-800-328-9552.

Look on eBay for electronic versions of the manual. Mechanics like to sell their older version when revisions are received.

Dang! You're everywhere! LOL and here I thought I could post over here on stangnet so I didn't get annoying asking a million questions but you pop up and answer all of them no matter where I am! Anyway, i appreciate it, this is a great tip!

Tried to rename this thread, but it won't show up in the forum as such.

Anyway, my new question is, can I remove and re-install the axel bearings in the uprights without a press? Perhaps a ball joint type tool could work (especially with an impact..?)?

If you are changing the axle bearing in the rear knuckle you will need a press. You will have to press out the hub first the remove the C ring and then press out the bearing. Nice and easy job with a press.

you didn't mention pressing the new bearing in. Will the hub seat it when everything is being re-assembled or do you need to use the press for this as well? Probably a dumb question! LOL

I have another question about pressing out the hub. I was able to get my hands on a little 6 ton press but I can't figure out how to use it to get the hub out. I know I need to press on the back of the hub from the back side of the knuckle; so the hub pops out on the wheel stud side of things. Problem is I can't get it in the press so the knuckle is on the press apron and the hub is hanging free underneath. Is this press just way to small or might there be a way to do it that I'm just not picturing?
