What belt to use with ASP 1 7/8" overdrive pulley?

I installed my ASP 1 7/8" overdrive pulley on the alternator the other day and when I put the belt back on the car the tensioner was not within the specified range, the belt was to long (FYI I have underdrive pulleys on the car already and have been using a stock belt with no problem up to this point). What belt am I supposed to use with this setup now??

I have:

BBK Steel underdrives on the crank and water pump
FFI overdriven pulley on a 1995 3G

I found that a 1" shorter belt put my tensioner back in the middle of the range. Before, the stock belt was bottoming out my tensioner.

Yea thats what I need! Do you have a part number on that belt or what its off of originally? I went to Pepboys and they had no clue which belt would be about an inch shorter than the stock belt, the were completely useless!

I also have the stock legth one hanging up in the garage if you need that part number too. I won't be home from work for another hour if you can wait that long though.

The stock lenght is 4060905. The last 3 digits of the part number indicate the lenght of the belt... see if that helps the guy's behind the counter.

Oh yeah, forgot to ask if you have A/C still... My car still has the A/C compressor

Yea, thanx bro! I went to Napa and got an equivalent NAPA belt from the part number you gave me. Put it on the car, works great!

I dunno the size, but I do run this exact pulley with the stock pulleys... the belt was 1/2 inch shorter then stock. Worked perfect.

Can anybody specify a good size belt to use for my car. I just ordered the same ASP alternator pulley (1 7/8") and I beleive my car has stock pullies. My car does not have A/C.

I realize I might have to try a couple but I'm not even sure which ones to start with.

Also, I hear lots of talk about a tension indicator. Is it the black peice of metal behind the tensioner nut in this picture (not my car)? If that is indeed the indicator, the one of my car is about 3/4" from the top limit.

Look on the tensioner itself. There is an arrow cast into the AL outer housing. it will point to a range in the black disk. As long as the arrow is inside the range, you are fine.


The best way to measure out belt lenght, is to simply run a string around your pulleys. There are way too many pulley combos out there for someone to know what size belt to run. Sometimes you get lucky, but a lot of times you won't.

Simply wrap string around your pulleys and measure, and go get a few different belts and try. The last 3 digits of the belt p/n are the belt lenght in inches. So if the number is 4060895, then that is an 89.5" belt. The stock belt is 4060905. Notice the first numbers are the same, but the last 3 change. This is a 90.5" belt.
