What block is the 4.6L built from?

I'm a bit confused on which blocks the 4.6L and 5.0L mustangs are made from.

The 2V 5.0L mustang is built from a 302 block, corect?
And the 4V 5.0L mustang is a 351 block???

What are the 4.6L 2v and 4v blocks built off of?

Correct me, i was debating this with someone, and now i'm all messed up

they are brand new blocks made from ground up. the 351 is 5.8

Didn't the 2v 302 come from and original 260 (or something like that), then 289, then 302, 331, 351?? Anyway these are all OHV engines.

2v SOHC 4.6 was all new when it was introduced in a Stang or early 90s. Then came 4v DOHC 4.6, 2v 5.4 SOHC and so on which are all part of the modular engine family...these are all OHC engines.

They are unique brand new design blocks not built off the old ford small blocks. I.E. it isnt a 302 with 4 valve heads. They are 281 cubic inch for the 4.6 and 330 cubic inches for the 5.4 liter. They are based on the "Modular" block not off any previous ford design.

The 351 and 302 were "windsor" based while you could also get the 351 "cleveland" which has a completely different block than the 351 "windsor".

There is no parts sharing between a windsor and the modular.

Liters are just another way to measure size instead of using cubic inches. In a world converting to metric the proper way to describe an engine is in liters but the standard way is in cubic inches.

The 5 liter mustang or 5.0 is a size in metric actually standing for 5 liters. The size in standard is 302 cubic inches. Cubis inches is also slightly more accurate as you can have 2 engines of different saize with the same liter size due to rounding. Take the 351 ford and the 360 dodge, both are considered 5.8 liter but one is obviously 9 cubis inches bigger. this happens because people round up. every 1 liter of engine size equals 1000 CC (Cubic Centimeters) so saying an engine is a 5.8 means it is 5800 CC. But auomakets will call anything from 5750-5849 a 5.8 liter engine.

The 351 displaces 5.8 liters.
A 350 chevy is a 5.7
The vipers from 1992-2002 were 8.0 liters or 488 cubic inches.

Also the 351 windsor was never made in a 4 valve configuration.

the 5.0L and the 4.6L are completely unrelated. the 5.0L 302 and the 5.8L 351 are related and the 4.6L 281 and the 5.4L 331 are related.

Its actually 330 cubic inches but there is nothing wrong with your math liters isnt exact. Ford.com lists the specs

the old 289 4V or any engine in an older car with a 4v stood for 4 venturi, meaning a 4 barrel carb. Ford never made a 4 valve small block for passenger cars before the 4.6.

there was a 427 sohc but it was still a 2 valve but it made great horsepower and was the only threat to the chrysler hemi on the nascar tracks.

the only true 5.0 was the GM 305 and 307

general Motors also built a 302 for use in the 67-69 camaros with the z28 option. It was a 327 with a 283 crank in it. They were screaming little engines.

i think it was actually 4.91L. but anyway, the reason the bumped it up to an advertised 5.0L was because they already had a 4.9L, the 300ci I6. just incase anyone cared.

the 302 positively OWNZ the 305. not even Chevy guys can deny that. that's why chevy went to the 5.7L in the 90's. they couln't compete with the 302 with similar displacement.
