I have been looking at some cars lately and am thinking about buying a Mustang. My question is, what year and mods would make it to 12's? I'm neither poor nor rich, so somebody give me some advice for an economical solution.

I have also been looking at Firebirds, SRT-4's, and WRX's. I like the SRT-4 but there's something about FWD that I find annoying.

Thanks for the info! Interesting reading. Only, how do I do it on street tires?

A sticky set of 15" drag radials (BFG, M/T, or Nitto) might get you there also the way that Bill Putnam describes it in his post that I linked.

There are other ways to do it also. The only weight reduction I have is from removing my spare and jack. My suspension also leaves much to be desired for drag racing compared to what Bill describes. I have run 12.90 and 12.97 in my car just recently with the following mods:

Comp Cams XE270AHs
Mac Long Tubes
Trubendz X-pipe
Magnaflow catback piping with Spintech mufflers
C&L Upper Plenum
Accufab Throttle body
Steeda CAI
Steeda U/D pullies
Dynotune/chip
FRPP 3.73s
BFG 275/50R15 Drag Radials

Here's my 12.97 pass: http://home.insightbb.com/~sir_not_appearing/nick.avi
My car still has more in it, but I need to keep working on my driving and it really needs a set of 4.10s or 4.30s to go with the powerband of the cams I have. And my rev-limiter needs to be raised so I'm not cutting the power off at 6250RPM.

Of course, you could also just get a good set of 4.10s, sticky tires, and a good nitrous setup and get twelves, but its not always at your disposal. I'd rather have the power on tap at all times. Yet another way you could do it is to go with one of T&Js Mongoose kits with either a Vortech or Paxton supercharger. There are many other kits, but theirs is complete and proven.

Good luck with whatever you go with. I've had a couple LS1s (Formula M^s) in the past and they were a blast too, but feel like you're driving a tank.

Nickthegenius, what are the dimensions of your wheels? I want to put a set of 15x? weld wheels on my car, but am unsure of what sizes will fit? Also, will I need to do anything special to get the 15 inchers to fit? I have a 2003 GT.

Thanks,

After several suggestions from Jackie Chan and others, I went with a pair of 15x7 V6 Mustang wheels. I would highly suggest getting 15x8, though if you are getting some Welds. My tires are slightly "pinched" due to the narrow wheel, but I think 15x8 should solve that problem.

Mine! Look at my garage... (I haven't updated my timeslip) 12.72 1/4 mile was my best run so far... With a dyno tune, it should be lower 12's...

chepest way there would be a used 99+ with some spray. I am not really a nitros man on a driver though.

second cheapest would be a used 99+ supercharged.

mach 1's will get into the 12's very easy.

03' cobra is alreay a 12 sec car.

LS1 cars get into the 12's easy with traction. It is a love hate relationship with 4th gens for me though. there fast put I don't like the hatchback, single exhaust, engine moved back, etc
