Hi-

I'm fairly new to the mustang world. I bought my mustang back in mid-February. Its a 94 gt convt with only 59k mi. The guy garaged it during the winters, and was looking to sell it for cheap since his wife told him he needed something more family-oriented (he bought a saturn vue eventually). Anyway I've been a mustang fan ever since.

So I've seen a lot of debate over what gears to go with, I think I've made my decision. I'm just not sure what else I need to get besides the ring and pinion. I heard you have to recalibrate the speedometer, is this true? What else do I have purchase? Thanks.

Yes you have to recalibrate the speedometer. I am not sure if you need to use the little speedometer calibration gears, or if you could use a speed calibratior from Dallas Mustang. Hopefully someone will chime in on this.

As far as what gears to go with, I would go with Ford Motorsport gears. I went with them when I had 4.10's installed in my '91 lx and couldn't have been happier. Also, your traction lok is probably in good shape due to the mileage, however, since you are in there, I would get it rebuilt. Also have the bearings and seals replaced.

JMHO.

What is the big difference between 3:73s and 4:10s?

4.10's give you better acceleration than 3.73's; at the cost of higher crusing rpms. I would go with 3.73's for a daily driver.

I agree 3:73's will be better for all around driving and racing.
4:10's are great but you will be taching over high at around 55.
My 4th gear is 3K at 55 with 3:73's and a Tremec.

The speedo calibration is a plastic tooth gear that you swap in the rear when you change gears, very easy..

I was in the same boat as you when I upgraded my rear. I was goign to go 3.73, but choose 4.10's.

I cruise at 26-2700 at 70 MPH in 5th.

And I love the SOTP feel with the 4.10'sm but first gear is realtively worthless.... unless you are trying to accelerate.

Ok, so the speedo calibration is the same as the fox. I wasn't sure. Gallyjh, is your car an auto or a manual?

Engine Might have to get a Dart block but don't want to and if I do, then 363 instead of 331. Thoughts on what I've already bought so far.......
