Well since i have an 86 mustang and the flat top pistons in my engine, im thinking about hitting the wrecking yard and getting a rebuildable long block to build. My question is does the engine have to be from a mustang 5.0, or can i grab a long block from a t-bird or lincon? I know i would like it to be a late model 5.0 motor, maybe 90 and up. Are the blocks and heads the same? Thanks for the advice.

IT depends on how much you are planning on building. If you want to use the long block the way that it is then you need to get one out of a Mustang, Tbird or cougar with the HO motor. If you are planning on building a strong running 5.0 engine with all kinds of goodies then you can just get any 5.0 block. You might want to think about a newer explorer engine that will have the GT40 heads and intake that you can use.

87-92 mustang 5.0 or lincoln (i believe they had HO's) make sure the firing order is 1-3.... and not 1-5.... if the motor still has the plug wires

dont get a tbird or mercury motor cuz most of them are SO's

and also try to get a block made in mexico......i believe the have a higher nickle content witch makes them stronger

options: 302 5.0 ho from lincoln vii lsc i believe 89+ 302ho 225hp, double check cause although 89 is 5.0 i have a feeling that yr only put out 195-200hp. explorer 5.0 is not ho. ho vs non ho big difference. not sure about chickenbird. consider 351w, found mine online (craigslist.org) '69 351w complete head2toe & c6 tranny for only $200. ford rated 290hp stock but actually about 330hp. you will spend slightly more for the swap to convert. but well worth it for extra hp/trq and future upgrades.

351w in truck/vans F-series trucks, E-series van 150,250,350's the +94 are roller bit more $$$, roller kits are avail for non roller 351w's though. as you can see i'm abit biased, love my 351w

:stupid: 351w rocks

I think you can also find them in a few years of Broncos too.

Yes it is. It was a delinquent of the cobra engine sporting most everything the mustang cobra 5.0's had with the exception of a different cam profile more suited for low-torque and they didn't feature the 1.7 rr ratio. Other than that, everything else was damn near the same.
