I have a 66 Fastback and I need a all new exhaust set-up,I bought new Tri-Y headers and m looking for the best set-up.It's only a 302 and I figure a 2 1/4 inch will work just fine.Do any of the pre bent kits work well or are they usually a tuff fit?(looking at Flowmaster)Want a H-pipe or X,what does everyone suggest.Need some help. Also I here the shorter Flowmaster muffler is a better fit,is that the 2-chamber or the 3?I think the 3 is quieter?

I personally have the flow tech warlocks for the removeable cap for open pipes, but i realy like the sound of the Spin Traps and the seem to give the most power in testing.Eldelbrock is good too.I dont care for Magnaflow, toooo quiet for me and Flowmaster dont flow as good. Also go with 2 1/2 inch all the way back. The muffler pocket is pretty big,the 2 chamber is smaller, but the 3 is quieter.

if you want quiet power, then use the magnaflow mufflers with an H pipe. unless you are going racing, and are going to turn the engine above 4500 rpm regularly, the X pipe will not do you much good overall. if you want a louder system(i prefer mine quiet) then flowmasters are the muffler you want.

I have a pair of Patriot Tri-Y headers on my 67. I used the glasspacks and side duel exhaust kit sold by these guys http://www.sacramento-mustang.com

This kit required one small bend, otherwise it worked quite well. It is also real easy to weld (or have welded) in a h-pipe while you are welding the kit up.

id say there is not good pre bent kit. the flowmaster kit will not bolt up to your tri y's without modifications. the flowmaster kit is designed for straight back exit headers and the passenger side of the tri y's has a curve. now if you buy an h pipe made for tri y's u may be able to do something, but not with the flowmaster kit. Id buy the mufflers you want and go to a local exhaust shop and have them make you the exhaust you want. and id go with 2 1/2" not 2 1/4". a 302 justifies 2 1/2" pipe, despite what some people say. all new mustangs dual kits are 2 1/2", i dont see the difference. also, the bigger the pipes, the better it sounds imo. i have 2 chamber flowmasters and they fit great. 3 chambers may be a little tighter, but are still doable.

Guys-

Magnaflow now has a kit for 65-70 Mustangs in 2.5" and 3"

I am running kits on my 66 and my 67-

As far as not seeing gains below 4500RPM with an X pipe- thats not correct-

My car originally had an H pipe and Flowmasters and when I put on the X pipe with Magnaflows my RPM jumped up about 200 at idle-

so you might say its breathing a little easier- and there was a definite seat of the pants difference through out the entire RPM range-

My 66 is quiet at idle and when cruising- but above 3000RPM- it is pure magic- best sounding exhaust I have ever had on a car- and it is definitely not quiet after 3000RPM-

Ill try and find my old dyno sheets- but I gained a considerable amount of low end torque going to the Magnaflows and X pipes over my old set up-
