I'm looking into replacing the stock clutch style fan(which is operating correctly) with a lightweight flex fan. I'm not looking for additional cooling as much as I'm looking to reduce rotating weight. I understand I need a "reverse rotation" fan .

how are the flex-a- lite fans? they are light but how do they cool and are they available in a reverse rotation? how much of a spacer would I need?

thanks
jake

do the junkyard fan upgrade. 3.8l Taurus fan and an autozone relay. Here is more detailed info: http://fordmuscle.com/archives/2003/02/electricfan/index.shtml

Flex-a-lite fan review/install:http://fordmuscle.com/archives/2000/06/electricfan/index.shtml

I believe Jrichter also has a fan article you might want to consider.

Onlky one way to go in my book- MARKVIII...

if you want to totally eliminate your cooling issue and never look back w/o any nightmares-Go this route. how you want to control is a different story!

I disagree. If you're car is mostly stock then a Flex-a-lite Black Magic is the way to go. I just bought one brand new on EBAY for $120 bucks. Look around be patient.

I've run a few different fan set ups in my day and none of them is as easy as the Black Magic for the 5.0. You can do the entire install in less than an hour. Although many of the other options you have may perform better- that extra performance is definitely not needed if your car is mildly modded and runs the stock crank and water pump pullies. Also, the wiring is simple and clean and less prone to failure.

Just remember-

If you like using your A/C dont go with the Black magic in my book. i had one, and just ripped it off for the MKVIII.
Black magic was a good little fan without the A/C-But i was just tired of having to shut the A/C off in the middle 100 traffic in NY.

S/N95 fan works great on my '91. Run it with a DCC (I know, tired topic).

The last straw-

being on a date, its as hot as balls outside, Im in traffic on the garden state pkwy-and having to shut the A/c off.. and having to hear the chick whine, bitch, moan and complain- that was it for ythe black magic fan for me!

Ant

get this, Fluidyne rad, 180 therm, edelbrock WP and the black magic fan- 210-230. w a/c on
same rad, w/p and the MK VIII not even 170, 180.... w a/c on.

You figure it out! Later Ant

i have the sn/95 fan, think about it if ford put it on the a car its gonna be good. Painless sells a wireing harness for it, pulls the right amound of cfm. I had the flex a lite and all i had was over heating probs.

I totally agree with ya-
MKVII 97
My set up is 100 re-settable circuit breaker
75 amp bosch relay

FMS Therm housing w/ 3/8 NPT plug
Painless temp switch 200 on/180 off.

8 GA wiring, with a manual switch for back up, run to ground. Be sure when buying the Relay, get a 5 prong, not 4-that was my mistake. The 5th prong is for the A/C WOT relay-to have the fan turn on w A/C on.

Anyways, if you swap over to a flex fan you're probably going to save only a little bit of weight.. a negligible amount. If you swap over to electric, you can lose the factory shroud, and the entire fan assembly (the heavy-ass metal part, etc.) The taurus fan probably weighs 3 or 4 pounds.. and besides saving you weight, it'll free up a few ponies.

Autozone only has a max of 40 amp relays and you need 75-100 amp
