Adam, is the auto going bye-bye?

I've had all the parts (minus the tranny) for quite a while now, and I came to the conclusion that I just wasn't happy with the auto and would swap it out eventually. When I was changing my heater core, and decided to take out the insulation from behind the dash as well -- which meant dropping the pedal box, etc...it was only natural to swap the pedals then. I picked up an almost new T5z not too long ago and now I'm just waiting for the right time!

MAn oh man oh man, this stuff is so opinion oriented, i understand your just trying to get the best and see what others are having succes with, but success is also opinionated in the car world.... I would go with regular ATF or a semi (something with some name behind it). It may seem like im talking out my ass but i read a article in 5.0 mag. and they tested ATF's and found the full syn to bubble up and fail to lube the gears, but it seems like it smoothes shifts because of the constant bubbling or some ****... lol...if i read this from somebody else i would laugh, but im not talking completely out my arse.....plz belive me
`LUCAS ran the test on the ATF's as well as scam prone tranny treatments...

Mobil Synth ATF
The first time I used it I could do the 1-2 shift by just tapping the top of the shift knob

Well there is one more store I can check. One store could get Royal Purple synth ATF, and I think the other may have Mobile 1 synth ATF.

BTW, on a side note, and ps....do all "Z" T5's have the 2.95 gearset? I know this car I just got doesn't have the 2.95 just from the feel of it, but it's supposed to be a ZT5. Just wasn't sure if a Z could come with the 3.35 set.

I think you'll be very happy with GM SynchroMesh. It's what is recommended by Tremec for the TKO-500 & 600 and works really well for smoothing out shifting.

Fluid in a manual tranny has foaming problems? I thought that was associated with fluid being pumped.

Adam, that sounds good. I remember you kicking around the idea with getting the Z, but I also remember that not that long ago you did your shifter.

Good luck with the swap (hard part is done actually).

This move threw me way off, I kind of lost my goals somewhere in the process and wondered a little with working on the AOD. I think this will get me back on track.

I hope the pedals really were the hard part -- because I wouldn't wish that on anyone!

I've only changed mine once and I used Max Life. I like it but I'm aways looking for something better.

im kind of confused on something. i just have basic penzoil atf i bought for my t5-z when i first installed it.

my shifts are kinda notchy and i feel like they could be smoother. i know its partially related to my pro 5.0 shifter. reguardless, i thought it was a no-no to run synthetic fluid in the t-5s?

is it ok to run the gm syncromesh in a t5-z? i thought it was tremec based if thats the case. any clarification? im sure there is something better too then what im using.

When they say "Tremec" they mean the ones with bronze syncrhos....T-5's don't have those. Use a good synthetic ATF.

No such gear my friend.....you might be talking about your rear end gears. V8 T-5's only came with 2.95 or 3.35 1st gear ratios.

Oh yeah, duh...
How about a Z axle?
That would make more sense, huh?

believe all z transmissions have the 2.95 first. i think i read they have a slightly higher overdrive gear versus the standard t-5 also. then there is the added strength in gears.

mine had work done by d&d performance to the syncro's and such, but it is a much nicer feeling transmission then my other t-5.

maverick, that is what i figured. ill probably look for the royal purple fluid or similar if i decide to switch.

I did a little searching and still couldn't find if a "Z" T5 could come with the 3.35 gearset. I had a Z in another car and I could definitely tell the difference in 1st and 5th....my new car doesn't have those gear ratios.

It shifts ok, not the best I felt. Don't know what fluid is in it, and it will get changed for synthetic hopefully this weekend and get a shifter on it soon. I just wonder if it's a plain ole T5 Anyone know of anything I can look at on the tranny to tell me?

Ok. I rebuild transmissions and sell new ones and i have two comments.

1. Whatever is in your transmission (which should be Mercon/Dexron III from the factory) keep running due to the fact that alot of times with different lubrications you have different additives that will not mix well with one another and there is no way to completely rid the trans of old fluid without complete dissassembly. This not mixing well can cause a variety of problems from minor to major. I suggest from my experience staying with what it started with.

2. Now if its a New trans with no specific recommendations by the builder then i personally have had unsurpassed success with GM Syncromech. It is what i recommend in all of my standard transmissions.

Hope this helps.

All T5z's come with a 2.95 gearset. That is part of what makes them stronger.

As for identication of your tranny -- towards the back on one of the bolts is a metal tag. If you clean it up there will be a number on it that starts out 1352-xx-xxx. The last three digits will tell you the exact model. There are lists of them all on the internet (http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/T5ID.htm for example) or you can post here and we will decode for you.

Well no 2.95 gearset, so no ZT5. Ah I'll have a glide and a turbo'd big block in it before long anyway

I believe D&D sells either rebuilds or T5Z kits with a 3.35 first gear.
