I'm trading in my 96, looking at an 03. I need a truck that is a 4 x 4 and seats five. Is there a year that is better to mod, and are there any good truck web sites out there? Big Cat steered me to modularfords, but there truck forum isn' t that great. My truck is my winter car, so I do need four wheel drive. I would like something easy to modify and be fun to drive...these flippin winters in Maine are way too long to not drive my mustang!
Many thanks,
Doc

The 97-03 F-150s are about 500# lighter when comparing similar styles to the '04 and up, so if you are looking to modify the truck, I would think that weight might be a factor for you. The 4.6 is the same basic engine IIRC, but the 5.4 went to a 3 Valve head with variable valve timing and jumped from 260HP to 300HP with the '04+ F-150.

www.pirate4x4.com always has stuff going on. Interesting forum, this would be an ideal question to ask those guys.

Try http://www.f150online.com. There is a lot of info about the trucks and mods available.

truck

I have an 05 f-150 4.6, 4x4, 4 door....Boxed frame, 6.5 ft bed. Very nice truck. Decent gas mileage...The 4 doors make for a lot of blind spots though...I guess the truck u want depends on the way u want to use it...is it for work, fun, build up? The truck was only 22,000 brand new so u might want to look at a new one? I bought in 06 as a left over...I bet u could buy a used 05 for 16 K maybe less....

I just noticed u were in Maine to Doc, me too....where do u live? You can come drive it if u want, may help u decide on which year u like better....I bet it would be easy to mod, and the boxed frame would reduce flex and body roll if u built it up...

Where in Maine

I'm in Cape Elizabeth, and currently looking at an 03 at rowe ford. 43K miles, 4 x4, five seats short bed, 16K. Hey, if you know someone looking for a king cobra project, I'm selling one! Where are you in Maine and are there any clubs up here?

The newer 3 valve 5.4's are a pretty good motor in that heavy truck.

The 5.4 is better, i have one in my 97 f150....but the price was right on the 05 with the 4.6....the truck MSRP was 31,000. But, it has no power anything, small V8, manual shift 4x4, steel rims...it did come with a bed liner, over sized tires, step in bars, plus my family buys about 6 or 7 cars a year from the local dealer so he treats us well...

Truck for Doc

Doc, I'm moving to Fla. this summer. I was going to trade in the 05 f150 toward a GT, the trade in is only 16,500. If u want to wait till July Ill sell it to u for the trade in value...it has 34,000 miles on it now...maybe 37,000 by July, Its beige 4 door A/C, CD, 17inch wheels, 4x4, really nice but i don't need it in Fla....I'm in Gray, not far...There aren't any clubs I know of....I was big into classic stangs for years but Ive been away from the hobby for many years now....I know back in the early 90's there were no real Maine mustang clubs...Also, I have a friend that has had a king cobra sitting in her yard rotting for years, in Falmouth...never really cared for them personally, but i hear they are becoming popular.
