with a auto for sure bro get 4.10's, you wont regret it...I had 4.10's in a 5spd, and imo I still could have went to 4.30's and have been very confortable on the street. this was in a daily driver also...ah 4.10's were great, it also made up for the lack of hp I had.

4.10 without question. I run an aod with 4.10s,a TransGo kit and a 3200 Precision Industries torque converter. IT feels lovely imo

IMO, if your engine is stock, get the 3.73's. 4.10's are a little too much gear for me with a stock cam. The engine doesn't need to rev that high on the freeway I've got 3.45's with my 5-speed and I wouldn't get any other gear for that on the street. If I had an auto though, I would do the 3.73's.

I vote 3.90 if you are going to be on the highway.

I had a 4.10 with an auto and a H/C/I motor. It pulled very hard in 3rd gear. But it would not shift into 4th under WOT, and 1st gear went by way too fast! I say 3.73's and a nice shift kit. 1st to 2nd shifts were at like 4,700 for me, unless I did the AOD SHUFFLE!!!!! Yeah!!!

Best all-around performance meaning straightline, cruising rpm, best overall 'mesh'?

Answer:

3.73:1 for AOD.

so the higher the gear the higher your rpms are gonna be in 5th right? I do a lot of highway 70-80mph driving, would 3.73 be revving to high at that point?
EDIT: 5 speed

magnj - At 70-80mph, you will typically see 2,400-2,600 rpm at cruise. That pushes it for me, because I do some long interstate trips a few times a month.

A 4.10 would have a higher cruise rpm than above, which is 3.73.

I have a 91 LX 5.0L 5 speed. 3.73's at 80MPH is at 3,000. If you have an auto, you only have 4 speeds, so your RPM will be higher than 3K at 80MPH. I would suggest 3.55's then for highway, but 3.73 for best overall.

I think 4.10's are what so many recommend for auto. But if you had to choose between only 3.55's and 3.73's then I guess I would go with 3.73's.

huh? "If you have an auto, you only have 4 speeds, so your RPM will be higher than 3K at 80MPH" . . . the AOD is an overdrive trans. it goes into an overdrive gear on the highway just like a manual trans.

with 4.10s in a stick, first gear goes by quickly. but the auto this is okay. 3.90 is a good gear for the 5.0. if the motor was a 4.6, which makes all its power by revving with little torque, i would say go for 4.10. but for an auto fox with a 5.0 i would say 3.90

Mine sits at 2,650 or so at 80mph.

Gear Calculator:

Reference with T5 transmission/stock tire size/16in. wheel, in 5th gear cruising rpm at 70mph (Interstate Speed):

2.73:1 - 1696 RPM
3.08:1 - 1914 RPM
3.27:1 - 2032 RPM
3.55:1 - 2206 RPM
3.73:1 - 2318 RPM
3.90:1 - 2423 RPM
4.10:1 - 2548 RPM
4.30:1 - 2672 RPM
4.56:1 - 2834 RPM
