I'm guessing your talkig about a Air Breather? Anyways, this keep small mounts of trash from being sucked up into the motor. Things like this and not changing your oil will lead to a new ring job on a motor. I'm sure you will see these guys running no breathers racing around your tracks( maybe even town) but these guys probaly rebuild that motor every year. There is a small amount of power you can get off a 2.3L but it's not really worth the risk of running without one. There is a CAI induction you can build for a 2.3L that adds like 2hp if you want to get your moding feet wet.

I hope this helps

So essentially, I can add a breather on and get better MPG? or just does it let me accelerate a bit better with my N/A? Cause i already have K&N everything filters already in the stock box...a tiny bit modified, and oil filter and fuel filter for it, so like if i added a breather then i could essentially get a tiny bit more power?

Where does this breather go. Is there anything that can replace that thing on the back of the SVO valve cover with the hose to the turbo?

The only reall noticeable difference I saw was in my higher RPMs. The car seemed to rev a little better and sound better but no noticeable hp gains or mpg. I used a conical K&N filter inside the fender and ditched the stock air box also.

I'm guessing you are also talking about the air breather? All 2.3s are basicaly in the same spot on the fender. The SVOs has the air box hooked up to a VAM sensor while a 2.3L is hooked up to like a MAF depending on the year of car and if it's carb or EFI.

I really don't think they have a replacement part for this and probaly never will.

check out their site they have a kit to replace the stock set up. NO HP gain but you wont have oil blowing back into your turbo inlet and VAM

Hey Thanks Eric.

I couldn't remember what that thing did for the life of me It's a oil seperator and as you stated, cuts down on oil blow by. I think most people just clean it out and reuse it but don't quote me on it. Now if they make a new kit deal for this I may need one my self

Now I know I know what a breather is. I came up around old school metal, and learned from my old school gearhead Dad what this is and that is. But who knows, maybe breather means something different now?

Now, as I learned and have observed on inumerable cars, and in so many speed shop catalogs and go-fast mags it would make your head spin- THAT THING STICKING UP FROM THE VALVE COVER IS A BREATHER(breather cap). It does not make the car go faster and has nothing to do with the air-fuel mixture. It allows pressure that develops in the crankcase to escape, and if you've got a nice one, helps your engine bay look cooler.

Is it a regional thing? What you all are talking about we call an air cleaner, the air filter goes in it.

I think you maybe confused with athe PVC Valve This is a check vlave designed to release pressure from the crank case to help keep you from blowing your gaskets, like the oil pan gaskets. This is located pretty close to the distribitor.

Back in the days they installed little breathers on valve covers but I'm still going to stick with this being a oil separator. I'm just to sick/tired to go look it up.

lol, this is infact what i was talking about i guess it is regional, or just difference in "schools" plus considering i'm new to it, so, bassically, does it save on engine life if i put it on? short of making it look cool?

I think it helps save on burning to much oil but I'm wondering if this is different on 2.3L to a 2.3T The ones for a 2.3T don't even look like a filter at all.

I believe the PCV(Positive Ventilation Crankcase, as opposed to PVC Poly Vinyl Chloride which is the plumbing pipe material)is the modern version of the old Breather cap, which allowed gases to escape into the environment. The PCV setup allows those gases to be burned by introducing them into the carb/throttle-body.

Some breather caps have oil seperators in them, like the old MOPAR style ones that have a nipple for attaching a tube, which can then be attached to a header(in these applications the goal is to cause a suction to improve ring seal).

As for being "sick/tired", I hope you feel better. Go eat some yogurt, it's good for you.
