What harm could gear whine do?

Hey guys, recently the gears started whining badly. I'm talking it sounds like a jet engine is in my trunk. Yea, it sucks bad and I'm having my mechanic that installed them look over the car this weekend.

Anywho, what's a fix for this? Could I have damaged something to make it do this? Someone suggested it could be the driveshaft? Who knows. Any suggestions on what he's going to tell me needs to be done? I don't have to buy new gears do I?

they prob cant be fixed. the wear pattern is set and i dont think it will be able to be corrected. at least thats what i've always been told

How long have you had the gears? When the gears were installed were new bearings used? Do they whine only on acceleration, only on deacceleration or both? Does the sound of the whine change as you go faster. It also could be that a bearing is going .

I did the gears back in April of 06. They just started whining 2-3 weeks ago. It doesn't whine until about 40mph then it gets worse the faster I get.

could be a bearing. what gears are in there(brand and ratio)? were you the one that had all the problems with the install?

Ambo:

Have you checked your wheel bearings? Just a thought but I had an issue similar to this and after changing all of the dif bearings it ended up being a simple wheel bearing

If not, then get the 4.10's and have the guy that installed the other gears cut you a deal! He owes you that much!

My car does the same thing past 40mph it roors. I am replacing diff bearings now

have you looked to make sure you don't have a leak...one of my set screws in my TA rear cover backed out and i didn't know and most of my fluid leaked out while driving and started to whine...i had to replace the gears and rear diff. Thats when i upgraded to the auburn pro.

just a wild shot in the dark. But then if that was the case, wouldnt it whine at all speeds?

All you have to do is open it up and look at the gears. If the gears are causing the whine, you will see the damage easily. I would just drive it until the rear locks up. Or if you have the cash, get a new diff and axles.

Before you do anything to/about the rear axle, are you SURE that the noise you are hearing is rear axle noise? These days it is getting more and more common to hear tires that roar so loud you can't stay in the car. Have you kept your tires rotated?

Have someone drive it to verify that the problem is rear axle related before taking further steps.

Yea, I'm actually bringing it to the mechanic who did the install this weekend. I really don't think it's the tires as I've been on these tires since I got the gears done and they never were this loud. ever.

If the actual gears were bad, wouldn't they whine at every speed? It's only at fast, crusing speeds (40+) which is making me believe your suggestions that it's a bearing issue.

DropTop, I thought about the fluid issue and when it started I would check my pumpkin before and after driving and never saw a drop or drip on it. I'd like to rule that out. Dang I hope there is fluid in there lol

I'd go to 31 splines, but the car will probably never see the track in it's life being it's a vert and with all the new rules for blown applications that I don't want to deal with. So pretty much she's a street queen.

I'll keep you guys updated once the mechanic takes her for a spin.

Tires will sometimes develop a roar over time. This usually happens when they are not kept rotated. Have you kept them rotated?

Just because tires do not roar when new, does not mean that they will not get noisy as the miles go by.
