I have Hooker long tubes 1 5/8" on a 65 and am changing heads to Canfields. My question is what are other people running for headers on these heads? It looks to me like 1 5/8" primary tubes will be slightly smaller than the port size. That has to raise h**l with the air flow!
Accufab has some headers in the 1 3/4 size with exhaust flanges for your specific heads. They fit pretty tight around the engine but they have clearance issues in other places.
Mine hit one shock tower and the firewall. They are also very close to the transmission, to the point that a transmission blanket pretty much wont work cause it melts the straps.
I have 1-3/4" FPAs on my '65 with AFR 205cc heads. In order to run these headers, I had to eliminate my z-bar by going with a hydraulic setup (I chose Cobra Automotive/Tilton), shave just a bit off my McLeod scattershield near the starter, run a mini-starter with my 157-tooth flywheel, and make a small indentation in one header tube to allow full turn-to-turn clearance with my quick-steer Pitman arm. I'm also using stock-height Ron Morris adjustable engine mounts.
After making these modifications, though, the FPAs have a better fit all-around than the 1-5/8" Hooker SuperComps I had on my old engine. The headers do not contact the shock-towers, firewall, or come close to my Toploader...and they do tuck up quite a bit higher than my old Hookers. Also, the wider bolt-pattern makes installing/removing the headers much easier, as you can get a socket on each bolt...and I think Canfields have the same wider bolt-pattern as AFR 205s.
