What intake to buy or to buy one at all?

In addition to a whole bunch of Polo shirts my mom gave me 1k dollars for Christmas. I was thinking about getting an intake manifold, but I've heard that just the intake without heads won't do much. My mods are in my sig, I was just wondering if it was worth it to buy one or just wait. If I did get one what would complement what I already have done the best?

You are correct, the intake alone will not yeild much in the way of power. You will pick up some, but it's the heads that are really holding you back. If you keep saving, you will beable to purchase a really nice set of Aluminum heads and then have your stock lower intake ported by TMOSS for only $150.00 (Stangnet memeber)

A set of heads typically costs $1300.00 + Tax

If that isn't the route you want to take, than spend that money on other small things.... But you are so close to a nice set of heads....

If you plan on doing the heads any time in the future, I'd go ahead and get the Cobra. I'll be able to tell ya'll Saturday night how TMoss's intake performed on my car. You'll definately feel the Cobra, though. Mostly up top. It should noticeably harder from 3k and higher. The TMoss lower intake cost me $110 for porting and $21 for return shipping. It weighed 17lbs. if you want to get a quote for your area if you go this route.

What about an Edelbrock Performer, are they known to be better than the Cobra? Will it prove to be a later restriction when I get the heads? I want a intake that will pull all the way to 6000rpm.

It flows about 5-10cfm more than the Cobra. They're both in the same ball game area. It's runners are designed differently than the Cobra's which in turn causes it to make a few, literally, more horsepower up top, and a few, once again literally, less torque down bottom from what I've seen in dyno comparisons. I like Ford stuff personally, but if you put heads on it the Edelbrock would probably make around 5 if not slightly more peak horsepower than the Cobra. It won't have the same low-end torque, but it's not a big difference at all. Probably wouldn't notice it. The Edelbrock will pull to 6000rpm, but it probably want go any higher without a good dropoff in the power curve.

As far as being a restriction, it depends on which heads you plan to use.

even if you save up for the aluminum heads you will have to spend closer to $2000 for everything needed for the swap. might as well do the cam while the engine is apart but that would part of the $2000. cobra intake is a good starting point. it wont be a restriction anytime soon. maybe look into a set of gt40's and drop them off at the machine shop. i guess it all comes down to how much you want to spend.

If your going to use heads that flow more than GT40 style heads (190-200cfm) then a ported lower and stock upper is not the way to go and a Cobra or Performer would be good choices for future growth - buy whichever one you can get in good condition used to conserve on the cash.
