Depends upon your setup and what type of driving you do......minimalist questions receive minimalist answers.

I have no clue.

If it is economy or performace I would pick performance.I have heard that the overdrives have good performance as well as fuel ecomomy though.

I am most likly going to have a 347 ci or 351W with a 9 inch rear equiped with a detriot locker and 3.73:1 gears. Also I will probally go with 295's on the rear tires.(15 inch wheels)

Some with big bucks use a doug nash 5spd, the 6spd they put in the newer SVT Cobras isn't bad.
I personally like the old 4spd Toploaders... just try and break one !
I abuse the heck out my Toploader (over 400hp) and it's now 34 years old !
Beat that !
Although I sure would love to have a 5th gear .... then I could run more Rear end gear ratio and still have a liveable highway rpm.

Just my 2 cents

I'm 100% with mach1steve on the Toploader thing. Got one too in my V8 Ranger, same age, but been rebuilt once in 34 years--- top that with ANY other 4,5 or 6 speed

what kind of performance are you looking for? the C4 (auto) has been proven to be quite effective in a drag racing/ street car especially in bracket racing where consistency is important. its tough to beat the T5 for all out driving fun. if properly built it can handle over 600hp, and has an overdrive for great street cuising. A stock t5 out of an 87 to 93 mustang gt would be adequate for a mild small block built for an early mustang. the world class T5 from FMS can handle lots of abuse from just about any NA small block. beyond that companys such as G-force make bullet proof T5's and T56's for those that need even more gears.

for your 347 or 351 with 3.73:1 rear i recommend the world class T5. get the hydrauilc clutch conversion kit and you'll have a real nice set up.

Richmond gear bought out Doug Nash and used that design for their 5 speeds and then their 6 speeds.

According to 66 Blake 96, MY transmission is 1 more better than any 5 speed. He compared it to the Spinal Tap amps that go to 11.

gp is gonna chew you up and spit you out on that one. (two overdrive gears in the T-56). Not that I'm any kind of tranny guru. It's just what I've heard.

You can have your wider ratio, sloppy shifter, 4 speed with 2 overdrives. Don't forget to wire up the reverse solenoid to aid you in shifting it into reverse

2MFF - it's very special, because, as you can see--the numbers all go to 6. Right across the board.Six, 6. . . .

Blake - And most trannys go to 5?

2MFF - Exactly.

Blake - Does that mean it's better? Is it any better?

2MFF - Well, it's one better, isn't it? It's not 5. You see, most blokes are going to be driving in 5th--you're in 5th in your car, where can you go from there? Where?

Blake - I don't know.

2MFF - Nowhere! Exactly! What we do, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?

Blake - You shift it to 6?

2MFF - Six. Exactly. One better.

Blake - Why don't you just make 5th better, and make 5 be the top number, and make that a little better?

2MFF - ..............These go to 6

They should really label the highest gear 'infinity'. 6 is not really that high a number. Just not that impressive at all.
