What is the best for performance out of 3,4,5 or 6 speed?

I love my C4, but it would be nice to have overdrive. Can an AOD be built as strong as a C4 on a budget?

Toploaders were never "sloppy" the factory 4 speed shifter was "sloppy" , not the transmission itself. My current Toploader is as tight as any 5 speed with a Hurst Comp + shifter.

Are those the stock 4 speeds?

To answer your question, yes, most likely. There were also a few Borg-Warner T10 4 speeds installed in Ford's too. But those were phased out around 1966. There was also a lighter duty 4 speed before the Toploader came around, called the Dagenham.
