What Is The Difference Between A 2000 Mercury Gran Marquis 4.6 And A 97 Mustang Gt 4.6?

?1: No. The 2000 and older Crown Vic, Grand Marquis, and Town Car (Ford Panther) all have non-PI 4.6's.

?2:Yes with some modifications. The long blocks are the SAME (matching head type PI/non-PI) as the PI/non-PI Mustang version. The difference between the motor from a Panther and the Mustang is the stuff bolted onto the motor, fuel delivery, intake, exhaust, and TUNE.

May be smarter to get a salvage motor from a 2001+ Panther. Then you will end up with a PI motor instead. I personally would go for the 2003+ as those model years don't have the "spark plug" blow out problem that is as common in the early PI heads.

However, expect that the stock tune in the 97 Mustang will not extract all of the HP gains that are in the PI heads. For that a custom tune will be needed.
