What is this, and do I need it?

It was mounted under the dash, right behind the glove box. Can I just plug the vaccuum line, or do I need to recconnect it?

W/o that vacuum line attached to the vacuum tree on the driver side firewall, then you fan/blower will only blow through the defrost vents.

Any suggestions on where to run the line through the firewall? My vaccuum tree is gone, so I only need to go to the intake.

It used to run through where the a/c lines were, but I filled that area in.
