Don't know what you were trying to picture "up front", could be the fuel vapor tank. But your statement about "...another can(smaller)on the back firewall." gives me a little clue. Just inboard from the AC evaporator box (if you have A/C), there is probably what looks like a slightly oversized Planter's peanut can with a single vacuum hose going up to a vacuum distribution block high up and almost center on the firewall. This is a "vacuum storage tank" which holds a vacuum (under WOT conditions) to operate "vacuum motors" which control the various doors that open and close heater-A/C-fresh air vents.
I'll leave it for Dave's interesting and funny thread on semantics to determine whether the vacuum powers a "motor" or an "engine"; to say nothing of discussing a tank that "stores" an absence of atmospheric gases
