What does it do?
Can/should I take it off and add it to my "things for the Mustang box"?

I was a mopar guy so i'm new to the Mustang community. If I had to guess, I would say it's some vacuum 'thingy'. The hose it's hooked to seems to run to the back of the vehicle. The 'missing' hose looks like it may have gone to the stock air cleaner...maybe?

I've never seen anything like that before, and I've been around fords for quite a while. As a guess, I'd say its some sort of charcoal canister for a very early style emissions system. It also looks kinda like a power steering resorvoir, but its on the wrong side, and you say it only has vacuum hoses. Strange.

Yeah. A charcoal canister fits the reasoning behind this hose running to the rear of the car. It also would explain the "foil-like" hose protruding out of the top of the canister. I definitely think this went to the original breather.

Whatever it is, don't pitch it. Looks like an unusual OEM part.

It's not rare. It's on all 71-3's and newer cars as well. I can tell you that
the Foil hose attaches to the aircleaner just between the snorkel and
the PCV Breather

And I think it vents the gastank, so if you do chuck it, do something with the hose.

It's a 1970 Grande'. I definitely won't pitch it and i'm thinkin' of just capping it. I'll just add it to the eleventybillion other parts that I have pulled off of my other cars.

Now....will capping a fuel vent cause me problems with feeding fuel to the motor?
