4 stroke engines require no back pressure.

Have a look at light aircraft, aircraft have no mufflers. Most light aircraft have headers, that join into a single pipe with no muffler.
 
Again if he is going to use a set of ported stock heads then he is better off leaving the stock cam in the car, the gains from another cam will not be worth the trouble. he is better of degreeing the stock cam and verifying the timing events ( they are off a little from the factory) and adding RR's ( don't forget better springs)for the added lift and gaining that way. IMHO I wouldn't even bother with those old "aplhabet" cams. Better heads heads then something like a trick flow stage 1 or 2, anderson, or even custom depending on the heads. stock heads= stock cam.
 
For ported stock heads, just leave the stocker cam in there. If you are set on a mild cam, the TFS stage 1 is my personal favorite or the E303 will do too. Honestly mildly ported stock head's are hardly worth the trouble IMO. Yes there are gains to be had but still... The biggest bottleneck is the intake. I would start there and work your way down. Exhaust will net you some gains but after 1k, you are better off putting that into some decent heads and a cam. Gears as stated will really do wonders on the SN95s. Might not be a bad place to start too.

For those saying dont change this or that, but change this, that makes absolutely no sense.

Hmm, dont change the cam or heads, but put a bigger TB on lmao.

"Technically" if youre going to do anything to help with airflow, it should be across the board to see optimal gains.

However, most of us arent millionaires and we upgrade 1 or 2 parts at a time. That being said, there are no "right" or "wrong" suggestions in this thread.


Do whatever you can afford or that floats your boat.

I would hold off on a cam swap untill you go H/C/I/stroker/etc...

The 94-95 computer programming is a little *picky*, it isn't as forgiving as the 87-93 code and it tends to frown on things like longtubes and bigger cams.

So you may want to hold off on cam untill you're ready to buy a piggyback or pay for full custom tuning.

With just ported stock heads, a cobra (explorer) intake, bump timing 3-4 degrees, 3.73's, etc... you get a nice improvement in seat of the pants at a cost that wont break the bank.

PS... shift about 5-5500. Stock motor makes peak power about 48-5200 so trying to buzz the thing to 6K, you're just wasting time.

1. aircraft run at 2-3000 rpm.

2. have you ever seen a port in an aircraft engine?!?!?! (hint: 1930's tech... makes a harley port look GOOD by comp :rlaugh: )

- they wouldn't gain enough bennefit from exhaust pulse timing/tuning to make the effort/weight worthwhile.

3. compare dyno runs b-b of same car, same engine, same day with a 2", 2.5" and 3" exhaust... you will see quite clearly that yes, infact, a modern 4 stroke automobile v-8 engine, does gain bennies from proper backpressure, scavenging, exhaust wave/pulse tuning, etc... of a properly sized exhaust system.

Or compare same engine with 1.5" primary headers to 1.675 to 1.75 to 1.875 to 2" primaries and you will see it all makes a noticeable difference, just like cam timing, just like collector diamater and length, just like etc....

(not a HUGE amount at *true street car* hp levels, but noticeable just the same)

Aircraft

I cruise/daily drive between 2-3k rpm.
What are header plugs for ?

The X portion of the exhaust will have a big muffling effect in itself.

As long as things are port matched, my header tube same size as my exhaust port ill have good flow.
