What RTV?

Does it matter on the color on RTV i use for my intake gasket?I got some Permatex Ultra black hi-temp RTV silicone gasket maker(PX #82180).Should that work fine?

Just be sure the RTV sealant you use is the hi-temp stuff and you should be fine.

black should be fine for the intake, thats what i used

Color does not matter, as long as its ultra rtv you're fine.

I think I used red. But mine leaks.

ok ,thanks for the help.

One more question, to take the old gasket material off the heads i know i need a razor but what else can make the process easier?

if they are iron heads you could use a wire brush but then you will have debrie everywhere which probably wouldn't be to good.

Even if he scrapes it off, there's gonna be debris in the cylinders and other places. Use a wire brush and vacuum up all the pieces. Make sure to vacuum out the cylinders real well too.

I use ultra copper on everything. But I changed the water pump in my Bronco with regular blue and never had a leak. Just remember to be patient with that stuff. What I found to work really well is to torque your bolts at 20-30 in-lbs or so, wait a day then torque it all the way down. That way it doesn't just all ooze out before it cures! I still have no clue what the difference is between Black, Grey, Blue, Red, Copper RTV I was actually going to post that question.

I used a wire brush to remove the gasket material from my heads when I did the intake swap. I put rags in each port of the head before using the brush, then just pulled the rags out with any debris laying on top of the rags. Then like Chris said, you can use a vacuum and suck the debris out of the lifter valley. Just make sure you don't use something that you won't be able to get back out of the port, I've seen a picture of someone who had paper towel plugged in their valves, it wasn't pretty. Good luck.

If you go to the Permatex website, they have a PDF catalog of all of their automotive products that has an application chart inside.

Basically it's a heat range vs. ductility thing. The copper is supposed to be good for everthing except intake end seals (not ductile enough would be my guess). Black is good for most things except thermostat housings, water pump cover gaskets, and exhaust manifolds. Blue is almost the same as the black, but not reccommended for intake end seals.

The Grey is for everything import except exhaust manifolds. . .

damn... i used the black (very lightly) because i didnt want to drive to the parts store to pick up another t-stat housing gasket...

its been trouble free now for almost a year if i have any problems ill buy a $2 gasket

First off, I'm not trying to be a prude but its "RTV", not "RVT". Just wanted to save you from some embarassment or confusion down the road. Second, I put a dab of the black high-temp RTV in the corners of the lower intake gasket and a bead of it on the front and back of the lifter valley. Don't use the cork gaskets that some kits include, just use a nice bead of RTV from one gasket to the other across the valley.
