What size bolts for headers on 289

I wanted to get my father some stage 8 locking bolts for his headers. I've had to grind down a socket of mine to fit his bolts. He has to re-tighten them up every 2 months or so. What size are the bolts that I need? Or do you guys use somthing else besides stage 8's? Maybe just some blue thread-locker?

I use the Stage 8's, but it depends on the flange of the header. On my thick flanged JBA's I needed IIRC 1 1/2 to 1 5/8 inch long bolts vs the 1 1/4 inch for the Tri Y's on another.

I've never had header bolts that didn't need periodic retightening. I know red lock-tite frees up with heat. If I recall it is up around 600F, not sure about the blue because we don't use it that often at my shop.

Try to locate with 3/8 inch heads instead of the 7/16 inch variety. Makes a world of difference in the tight areas.

Anyway, the thread is a 3/8-16. I do not know the specific length for your application. I have them on my engine and they fit and work quite well. I had to trim some of the washers but according to stage8 That will not affect the function. I only have them because they were free with my Summit headers.

krash, you are correct. I actually have a special 3/8 inch wrench that has been under the mercy of a grinder for those hard to reach bolts. Have always said that "headers" suck. They are needed but they really suck. Torque the header bolts and check very often.

Recently pulled the motor out of the Misses car with the exhaust manifolds on and it was nice, really nice. The engine will go back in the car with the manifolds on.

I had the same problem with accessing to tighten. "They" make a set of bolts specifially for headers with the mega non-moveable washer that have a hex (allen) head. No socket problems although I did have to grind one of the washers down a little. 5 minutes work.

i have the Stage 8 on my try y's and they arent worth 2 *****s.the problem is the tight area that a wrench will barely fit,the locks dont even go on,so out of 16 bolts,maybe 6 locks will fit.The only good thing is they have a 7/16 head and also use a allen in the center

Stage 8 makes 2 different types of locks,one is like a "wedge" the other is almost like a washer,mine were like a washer,so i just left them off after fighting with them
