Sorry for all the questions....But I am trying to determine what size rearend is in my car. It is a 86 GT. Guy I bought it from said its a 8.8 but I thought the stangs for the year came with 7.x. Is this true? He said the rear could have been changed but it des not look like it to me. How can I identify it? Take off the cover and measure?

Your 86 has an 8.8 inch rear end. 85 was the last year for the 7.5

Now the definition for trak- lock, is this a posi or a limited slip diff. Just curious I have a 88 gt was wondering what was the usual gearing in these? And what the came with factory

trak-lok=ford's limited slip.

as for gearing, probably 2.73:1's are most common, some 3.08s, and automatics could be had with a 3.27 (like mine).

It's a clutch-type limited slip.

2.73's were the standard gear ratio for both 5-speeds and autos. If you ordered the "performance" gear option, 5-speeds got 3.08's and auto's got 3.25's.

All 86-93 V8 stangs came with traction-lok and 8.8's.

I hated the 2.73's in my 86's 8.8 rear. Didn't take me long to get a 3.73 gear set in there.
