I have a 66 that I bought a rebuilt 302 for,I'm trying to figure out what starter needs to go in,it has a c4 tranny in it.The flex plate from the 289 is smaller than the one I got with the 302.The one for the 302 is 164 tooth but i'm not sure what year the 302 is.(a want to say late 60's)I want to get a smaller starter instead of the huge one that came with the 289.How do I find out wich starter to get.

flexplate starter

If the flexplate is smaller, then it should be a 157 tooth count. Ford used both on 289-351 family of engines for many years, To bring up a point, the older pre-78 or so engines used a 28 oz balance and newer one uses a 50 oz. Do you know what year 302 it is? Be sure that the flexplate matches or the engine will shake BADLY at RPM.
I am pretty sure C-4 only used 157 tooth plates. With the 164 tooth plate I am not sure you will find a fit. May have to go back to 157 tooth.
