Had to drive my 65 for about an hour and a half on a trip over the weekend and after an hour is started to stink! I can explain the smell as like what you get when you open a gearbox up or a diff, wow it was strong though. Going home last night the same thing happen on my return trip. There were no performance issues and the car drove fine but latter last night when I tried to move the car the starter motor wouldnt engage. It was like when you have a totally flat battery and it just makes that rapid clicking noise, but my battery is fine.

is it possible that your starter was staying on and burned up, like the motor was spinning but the shaft wasn't engaged. Or your alt. is going bad? Can you start the car another way? Pushstart.

Did you check the fluid levels in your gearbox and diff? When they get warm they can push fluid out the overflow tubes. Maybe the overflow tubes weren't set up properly. It's possible you smelled the fluid coming out of them.
