what tire on a 3.5 front skinny

hey guys, I am trying to save a few bucks and want to run a street legal radial on my 15x3.5 centerline autodrags. I have had no luck finding the right tire so far. Will a 165/50/15 work or maybe a 165/60/15? what does everyone else run? We don't have a pep boys here but we have all the other auto stores. any recomendations?

Mine just say 165s. They dont have an actual side wall size... They are cheapo tires too, but work great!

When i had my skinnies i ran 165R15's. They are the same tires used on VW beetles from back in the day. However, i did get mine from pep boys. I'm not sure if you can get them anywhere else.

For a Radial tire I found the Kelly Metrics from pep Boys to work and last the longest. I tried the Dunlop and Goodyears and they wore very quick.

I think the pair was around $60

Get some 165R15's from Pep boys.. I've been using Futura's (also ~$60/pair) & they last a long time.. well worth the 60 bucks.

edit: I see you don't have a Pep boys around you, any speed shop should be able to get em for you for about the same price.

Like everyone has said 165R15 for sure. BUT from what I've seen there are 2 common, but different tread patterns. One looks like it belongs on a farm implement and the other looks like it belongs on a car. On my car I run Dayton Daytona Metric Radial Widetrack.

They're made by Bridgestone. They don't have the implement tire look.

EDIT: BTW I got almost 25,000 miles out of my first pair of Dayton 165R's on my heavy (3600lbs) and daily driven 1990 Mustang GT Convertible.

do I need to worry about the speed rating. I currently run at the local 1/8th mile at 91mph but might go to a 1/4 mile track occasionally. What speed rating are the tires you are recommending. Should I get speed rated at 112 or higher? thanks for the suggestions

dont worry about the speed rating as that is for extended periods of time. so unless you plan on doing 112+ for long periods of time (which i wouldnt recomend on skinny ass tires!) then dont bother getting a higher speed rating

The load rating is something that should be examined. That's a relatively small tire - and the Stang's got a quite a bit more than half it's weight on the front tires. If it were mine, I'd sure look at the speed rating and be sure it exceeded the speeds I was gonna use the tire at - even for 1/4 mile blasts. You really willing to take any risk with that? --think about a blowout through the lights at 115. Hopefully it's a race only car - there's not much that's more dangerous than running skinnies on the street. Emergency braking and handling are severely compromised.
