That's a pretty wide open question, but I'll try to help. Where are you located? If you and the car grew up in the rust belt, you need to be much more concerned about rust than the condition of the engine. You could re-build the engine several times and spend less than you would on rust repair. If they will let you, pour a gallon of water down the cowl vent, in front of the windshield. If ANY comes out on the interior of the car, you've got a rusted cowl, which is a pretty major repair. It's quite common and once the cowl rusts, water will lay on and under the carpet and rust your floors from the inside out. More money. Get under the car and poke around. Is anything crunchy? Also check the trunk drops, frame rails, etc. Rust repair is very expensive, but often hidden by someone trying to make a fast buck. I have seen cars 'repaired' by screwing in a deli tray to the floors, then covering everything with black goo. If you are new to the hobby, try to get someone else to look at the car.
