I am wanting to know what those of you with experience think is the best tranny for a fox mustang. Wanting a standard tranny that is the toughest money can buy. I want to buy a tranny one time, install it, and not have to worry about it. It will be receiving a good deal of abuse steet racing, but not total destruction. Going behine a 351W that is highly modified, so I need something tough for street racing and occassional strip runs. What do you think? And what Clutch? Why do you like it? :SNSign:

I vote for the Tremec 600. I have one in my car and I'm very happy with it. As far as a clutch, a lot of guys seem to like the Spec Stage 3. They are known for being very grabby however. I have a McLeod in my car.

OK, I was thinking the Tremec TKO 600. And now thinking the Spec Stage 3 clutch. What is the difference between TKO 600 and 500 and t56? Will the TKO 600 with Spec Stage 3 be streetable and will it matter if it is more than my engine needs behind it? I plan to see about 400-450 h.p. but not real soon. I just need a tranny right now and wondering if this one will do the trick. I just dont want to have to buy another tranny when I get my motor to where I want it. What should I do?

The Spec stg 3 is streetable, but it does take a little getting used to due to the sharp engagement. If you want something a little more mild mannered you could go with a Centerforce dual friction, or a set-up like mine. I use a McLeod dual friction disc with a King Cobra pressure plate. I got it a www.ddperformance.com. The Tremec 500 and 600 are basically the same tranny. The main differences are the gear ratios and input shaft. The 600 comes standard with the stronger 26 spline input shaft, and has a higher 1st gear ratio, (2.89), which gives it a little higher torque capacity. The 500 comes with either the 10 spline input shaft(stock) or can be had with the 26 spline as an option. The gear ratios in the 500 are closer to a factory T5, and it has a 3.35 1st gear I believe.

The T56 is a six speed trans. It is rated for 450hp, unless you jump up to the viper t56, which is considerably more money.

specs are not recommended for use with a stock OR tremec tranny. they're too on/off and will break your tranny before long it's important that the weakest link be the clutch, and with the spec, you'll never slip that period.

Go for the tremec 600 as mentioned with either a mc cleod or centerforce dual friction clutch.

If you have deep pockets, I would go for the Viper-spec T-56 and the McLeod Street Twins clutch kit. If you need something stronger than that, you will probably have to have it built.

The 500 has a 3.27 first gear ratio. You'd need 4.10s in a 600 to get the 1st gear acceleration of 3.55s in a T5.

Thanks alot everyone. Hey IntenseBlue, doesnt the TKO 600 come with two different options on the first gear ratio. I have 373 gear as of now. Will I need to go 410 with a TKO 600 to keep gearing at least as low as it is now with either of the first gear options? If anyone at all can let me know if the TKO 600 and McLeod clutch is gonna be plenty tough? AND what McLeod clutch are you all talking about?

I don't know everything about them, but I'm pretty sure they only come with a 2.87? 1st. I'm open to corrections though. The 6 speed is a little heavier, but it's pretty cool to say you've got a 6speed too though.

So you are saying that if I go TKO600 I will need to go 410 just to keep as good of acceleration out of first gear as the t5 does what 355s???

TKO comes with two gears, the 2.87 (600) and 3.27 (500)

600 and 500 are the respective torque ratings, due to the first gear ratio (longer first gear can handle more torque)

t-56 is the 6 speed tranny found in vipers, cobras, and (i believe?) corvettes. a bit more involved than the tko swap, but some people like the originality of having 6 gears in a mustang. dunno on specs, but viper-spec t56 is rated higher than the cobra t56.

Just to add to what was said above, all TKO 600's have the 2.87 1st gear. The only option on the 600 is the 5th gear ratio. You can get either a .59 5th gear, or a "road race" version with a .82 5th gear. If you go with the 600 I would get the .59 OD, unless you never drive on the highway. I have the 600 with 3.73's, and I don't have any complaints about the longer first gear. As for the clutch, I have what McLeod calls the "dual performance" clutch disc. It's kevlar on one side and organic on the other. You can use it with either a King Cobra pressure plate or a heavy duty, depending on how heavy you want the pedal to be.

I have a TKO 600 done up by X2C Motorsports. Supposedly rated much higher then a regular 600. I also have stock gears, which sorta stinks due to the longer first gear in this tranny. Clutch is also a Mcleoud.

It is streetable but takes some time to get good. Clutch is very very stiff, and when I was first trying it out, I chirped the tires quite a bit. But the satisfaction of having 500hp and not worrying about the transmission makes me happy

Gforce is just as strong as the TKO transmissions i'm pretty sure and they retain factory T5 gear ratios with optional 5th gear ratios, but they only options make it lower instead of higher.

The G-Force syncronized gearset is only available with a 2.94 first gear, and either a .59 OD, or .73 OD. They are very comparable to the TKO in terms of strength, but only if you do the mainshaft upgrade, which is an extra $335. When I crunched all the numbers, I figured the price for the TKO was about the same if not a tad bit cheaper then the G-Force. Plus the TKO has a stronger case. There are pros and cons to both units though. Just my .02.
