What was the original Tranny on a 65 4spd coupe ? Is it a top loader with a 9inch rear ? How can I tell as well ? When I took a look the gear shifter came to the side of the tranny, and the rear looks pretty huge. It also looks like the original stuff the car had.

Thanx in advance guys.. I am slowly but surely getting it together ! And I have to admit, its been the most fun project out of all my Stangs I have own.

No 9-inchers in '65s except for K-codes and Shelbys. Almost certain its an 8-inch, if its a 289.

Very early '65 *may* have had the T-10 four speed, but most likely it will be a Toploader...only the finest factory four-speed ever built

Can you access all the bolts on the pumpkin with a socket wrench? Is there a 9X1.5" section sticking out the back of the rearend?

"K" code refers to the engine code in the VIN #, The "K" was for the 289 Hi-po engine. Fifth digit in the VIN is the engine code. Toploader 4 speed has a sheet metal top cover on the main case, the T10 had a cast, removable section where the shifter linkage attached on the driver's side of the main case. No top cover on the T10.

My '67 'vert 4-speed had a T-10 in it. I never did figure out if there was a way to differentiate whether a car came with a T-10 or a Toploader.

Do not know yet, But I will when I get home. Thanx. The car now has a
351w in it, so I guess the K thing is out. I will look at the tranny now with waht you have told me about the metal. Is what I am looking for by the part where the linkage is ?

to tell the difference between the top loader and T10 by looking at them from under the car, look for a side cover that bolts on with the shift linkage sprouting from it. if you have such a cover, then you have the T10 4spd. otherwise you have the top loader, and as stated before, it is the finest 4spd around. only the muncie rock crusher(M21?) is nearly as good imo.

If you look at the driver's side of your transmission and can see any bolts around a plate on the side (that aren't part of the linkage), it's probably a T-10. I believe T-10s were more common than toploaders in 1965 as they were phasing out the T10s and phasing in the toploader throughout the 1965-1966 model years. Either transmission is a good one, although only the toploader has the reputation of being nearly indestructable and is clearly the choice if you bump up the power.
