I'm not aware of any coating on the gears of the Cobra T5, the torque capacity difference comes from a different kind of bearing (caged) between the input & main shafts. All T-5s used in 1985 and later were "World Class". All of the reliable information I can find says the only difference between GT T-5's and Cobra T-5's in 1994/1995 was the tapered pocket bearing between the input & main shafts, and a steel bearing retainer (vs an aluminum one on the GT).cb18201 said:look in the faq page on our board. it says it at the bottom in the cobra info section. my friend who has a cobra syas his tranny is a "world class T5"

i think the difference is 30 ft-lbs. 300 vss 330 and the bearing(tailshaft?) I believe is different also. They ARE both from borg warner, and the cobra is also deemed as Z-spec, at least in the fox bodies. My friend is going to beef up a T5 a bit with bearings and whatnot just a little bit, and then stick it in his 450 horse 70 Torino to blow it apart if he can. (i know the 450 is a little low for a 351C but he's actually going to Fuel-inject it for 500 mustang parts all the way baby)HairyCanary said:All T-5s used in 1985 and later were "World Class". If you break regular T-5's, you're gonna break the Cobra one too, it's just a matter of time -- 10 ft-lbs extra torque capacity ain't much.

i busted 3 stock t-5's before buying my cobra one, and i still have it(for about a year now) and i beat on it just the same as the others.
