Do 94-95 Cobras and GTs have the same transmissions? some people say they do, and some say they dont, i have been told Cobras have a T45 and not just the regular T5. anyone know?

same T5 as us GT guys....ive heard more than once that there is a coating on the gears to make them stronger ...i feel like an idiot for not being able to remember what the coating is off the top of my head but someone will know....

its Phosphate...i remember that, are our T5s made by borg warner?
I'm not aware of any coating on the gears of the Cobra T5, the torque capacity difference comes from a different kind of bearing (caged) between the input & main shafts. Our T5's were made by Borg-Warner (who was later bought by Tremec).

look in the faq page on our board. it says it at the bottom in the cobra info section. my friend who has a cobra syas his tranny is a "world class T5"

the cobras do have a better tranny, mostly because of the tapered pocket bearing, instead of the roller bearings between the imput shaft and mainshaft assemblies. They also have whats called a cobra gearset that is coated, to make it harder etc., but it is a different alloy.

i busted 3 stock t-5's before buying my cobra one, and i still have it(for about a year now) and i beat on it just the same as the others.

All T-5s used in 1985 and later were "World Class". All of the reliable information I can find says the only difference between GT T-5's and Cobra T-5's in 1994/1995 was the tapered pocket bearing between the input & main shafts, and a steel bearing retainer (vs an aluminum one on the GT).

If you break regular T-5's, you're gonna break the Cobra one too, it's just a matter of time -- 10 ft-lbs extra torque capacity ain't much :D.

Amen to that Dave....i doubt it would even be worth it to swap to a Cobra T5....if your Cobra T5 is lasting much longer you probably just got lucky....

i think the difference is 30 ft-lbs. 300 vss 330 and the bearing(tailshaft?) I believe is different also. They ARE both from borg warner, and the cobra is also deemed as Z-spec, at least in the fox bodies. My friend is going to beef up a T5 a bit with bearings and whatnot just a little bit, and then stick it in his 450 horse 70 Torino to blow it apart if he can. (i know the 450 is a little low for a 351C but he's actually going to Fuel-inject it for 500 mustang parts all the way baby)

You went through 3 in what period of time?

The GT T-5 was rated at 300 ft-lbs, the 93-95 Cobra T-5 was rated at 310 ft-lbs (see here: http://www.ddperformance.com/Trans ID chart.htm). There is an aftermarket T-5 available (model 1352-251) that supports 330 ft-lbs, but it is unavailable for 94/95 (technically, at least. You could use a fox bellhousing to make it fit in a 94/95 car). The T-5Z is an aftermarket version of the Cobra T5 with a 2.95 first gear set and .63 overdrive, and a rating of 330 ft-lbs.

Now what do the ratings mean? 100,000 miles usage. So I'm doing okay with my 300 ft-lb GT T-5, even though I'm putting down about 70 more ft-lbs of torque than that. I just won't make it 100,000 miles :D.
