How can you tell what gearing is to be found on a certain AOD? What code to check, etc... I have this AOD from an 1987 E150 camper van, the thing moves like a mofo (for the size and weight of the thing). I wonder if the AOD has better gearing than the Mustang? It's not an AODE since it has a TV cable.

This is what's going into my car until I can afford something better.

There are two gear ratio's for an aod. stock and wide ratio. Your 87 camper van probably has a newer trans in it, or has been rebuilt using the wide ratio kit. the ratios are:

1st 2.84
2nd 1.55
3rd 1.00 (just like stock)
4th .70 (slightly higher than stock(stock being .67)

It is the same gears that ford motorsports offers for big money.

Yeah it's something like $700 or so.

I think all trucks and vans with the AOD came with the wide ratio setup. Not sure though. It's more for towing and such. Ford just robs the parts, slaps em in a kit and sells em to us Mustang guys for an arm and a leg.

From what i have read, not much improvement to be had with just the wide ratrio swap. You really need a shift kit and big converter and nice gears out back to make it even remotely worth it.
