Ive got a 65 Stang coupe and my girlfriend has got a 2001 WS6 6 speed with a MTI airlid, and exhaust dumped past the cats.My stang has some work to it but not alot of high performance stuff.Ive got flat top hyp. pistons,280H comp cams(and yeah i know thats to much cam for the motor but it was a free new cam and Im gonna put some AFR heads on it eventually),comp cams roller tipped rockers, douple sprung valves, valve shims,1968 351W heads with over size valves, edelbrock performer intake, edelbrock 650 carb,1 inch carb spacer, mallory distributor and coil(no box yet),pretty much stock exhaust, stock 3 speed auto, stock driveshaft, stock suspension, and stock rear-end everything.I would like to out run her without using notrous or forced induction.I know my car outweighs hers by about 800-900lbs so thats a plus.I think her curb weight is like 3700lbs.I want to be able to beet her in the 1/4.I dont care about outrunning her past 100-110 mph I know shell beat me up high.

Forget it. LS1 rulez.

You need quite a bit to get where you want.
Headers
Dump the Edelbrock carb/intake
Gears
After you get headers, gears, a single plane intake, and Holley carb... you should be able to keep up.

yeah I love the LS1 but I dont like my g/f gloating about her faster car.I guess i shoot myself in the foot though.I talk her into buying performance stuff and teach her about cars. The she buys the new parts and I put them on.I plan on a full exhaust,AFR heads, roller cam, roller rockers, stall conv, single plane intake and a 750 holley.Im not gonna be able to do the heads for awhile but maybe the intake and carb. But I would like to her what other people think.

Carb, intake, gears, exhaust
Those things will put you in the running.
Heads, roller cam, etc... are nice, but not needed right away.
That is a good cam, but breathing in and out, along with leverage are needed to show you just how good. (A converter wouldn't hurt.)

You have a 289? What gear ratio do you have? Get longtube headers ASAP. If your intake is a regular Performer and not the Performer RPM, ditch that quick! I'd mostly have to agree with what ratio411 said.

How do you plan on getting the power to the ground? Once you can get it to hook, you might find your times to be much quicker than what they currently are/would be.

I would strongly disagree with using any dual plane intake on that engine.
I had a 302 car about the same weight with a very similar cam and a Perf. RPM choked it way down. I put my SP right back on.
With 4.11 gears and a toploader, the car was pretty much dead even with my LS1 car's performance. I have pretty much the same mods as your GF. High 12s in the quarter.
Now, I will also say that the Ford car I am refering to, had absolutely no traction. My 60' times were amazingly BAD, I don't remember numbers, but it was an eternity. My competition would always leave me at the line, but when I stopped spinning in 2nd gear I would run them down and blow their doors off. I tryed feathering it off the line to keep traction, but the cam needed rpm to run so I would bog (for lack of a better word). I would get better times by letting the tires fry. If I ran slicks, no telling what it would do... break the 8" rear a few more times than it already did I suppose.
Good luck
Dave

Do you just want to beat your gf in a race, or do you want your car to be faster? the answers are completely different....reason I ask is because I have seen LS1's run mid 14's and later that night(different driver too) run high 12's. I'm not judging your girls driving skills, or stereotyping female drivers, but.....you may be able to outdrive her, especially in the 1/8th mile without having to do much to your car. Eventually the LS1 topend will get you, regardless of driver.

If I were you, I'd get a converter, gears, cal-tracs, and some slicks. You need to be able to use the power you already have before adding more power.

I agree with 411 up untill the intake choice. I've had all three of edelbrocks intakes and for a 302 I really wouldn't put on a sp unless you plan to do ALOT to this motor you have. I have AFR 185's and the rpm airgap and run low 12's. I think you would flip with a set of gears

P.S. you should be lighter than her.(your car)

it's going to take a fair bit to beat an LS1. my car will walk on a stock LS1 and will hang with those with a few mods.

believe it or not, you car is definetally lighter than her car. those cars were rather portly from the factory and your coupe is pretty light, but you're still going to need to significantly out power the car to beat it unless you want to cheat and use slicks...

anyways. shoot for 310-330 HP at the wheels with 3.73s or deeper gears and a 5spd. if you're keeping that auto, you'll have to ask someone else about that...

my combo:
DSS 306 - balanced, forged pistons, really nothing fancy
lunati 51017 cam (roller hydraulic) with 218/228 duration and .536 lift
Twisted Wedge heads, box stock with 1.6 FMS rockers
Performer RPM intake, 1/2" phenolic spacer, 750cfm edelbrock carb
1 5/8" long tube headers, X pipe (3 in, 2.5 out), flows
3.73s + Tremec TKO

the car has run as quick as 13.teens on street tires and in the 12s on drag radials. it'll hang with an LS1 car right to 140, but then the shift to 5th kills it.

I agree with 69 Elvira, except my car instead of his.

I also agree with ratio411 on the single plane intake especially if your not hooking up anyway, the top end gain would be probably outweigh the low end loss if any.

Gears and traction with a decent converter is always a plus.

Have you posted before about beating your girlfriend? This post seems strangly familiar or someone else in here wants to beat his girlfriends car.

Hell I don't know.......and if you can't beat your girlfriend I'm sure someone in here would be happy to beat her.

You up for a friendly bet?

I would wager that your car will lose ET and gain trap speed with the install of a Torker 289.
No other changes.
What you got to lose?
A Saturday? A hundred dollar bill for the intake?
What you got to gain? Power.
If you don't gain, sell the intake and recoup your dough.
Heck, I'll buy the intake if you lose power, but that won't happen.

Pretty good point! We built the Sinister Stang with enough horse power to run down a fully rapped out 2003 SC Cobra. We knew it would be a problem, but man oh man, I completely obliterate the 275x40x17's in the rear. I could easily over rev the motor off the line. Motor mods are important, but hooking is another game completely...

I think it would be a good race with a stock LS1. (street tire to street tire)

get a convertor and rear gears. with that cam you need to get into the power of your engine. the intake don't help either. an RPM would be ok but I think the sp makes since as long as your heads can handle the power in the high rpms. with the 351 heads you should get more gain out of the RPM but once you swap to the afr 185s the SP will allow you to take advantage of the high end hp
