whats a stock 5.0/5 speed get for MPG

I get 17-20 30% city prob 70% highway, i am not too easy on it either. Dads bone stock GT gets 26mph all highway, with a AOD and stock 3:27's or whatever was the highest gear available from the factory.

I've had 3 stock engines, and had my car since 93, I've probably bested ever like 20-22. Which is still in the believable area. 25 and above is a stretch IMO.

I agree as well. Maybe a little wishful thinking that a 20+ year old car can get better fuel economy than a 2006 Mustang GT (17/25 manual-18/23 auto )

However, the testing done by the EPA to set the numbers isn't exactly the greatest anyway. It's done on a chassis dyno and the final numbers are reduced by 10% for city and 22% for highway.

This means a 5.0 which is rated at 17/24 manual 18/26 auto could see 19/27manual 20/28 auto if you add those percentages back in.

The only way to tell what you are getting is to use the same chassis dyno they originally tested on. Way too many variables with tire sizing, and speedo gears.

Despite how accurate you may think your speedo is, it still could be off slightly. Everyone is tossing in aftermarket gauge faces moving the needles around or putting in numerically higher gears and changing the speedo gear in which most of the higher ones are "close" and not "100% exact". Who actually checks to see if their odometer is 100% accurate? Driving 1 mile to check really won't tell you much. You need to drive 10-20 miles next to someone and both start the trip reset at the same time and see if you get to 20 at the same time.

OT: I just noticed that the new Mustang actually gets less MPG than the previeus 4.6's. My 2003 GT's window sticker claims 18city/26highway with the 5-spd. I thought the 3V was more fuel efficient?

I think you guys are just looking for a reason your cars can't pull the same numbers down

My speedo gear was switched out for the correct ratio... and the route I took Bloomington In to Muncie In, is a route ive taken over and over with several different cars (2003 Celica, 2002 Honda civic, 1995 f-150, my mustang, 1998 ranger) ... The mileage all reads with-in 10 miles on the trip... The trip-odometer in my car is very correct.

What else do you think it could all be? 26.6 isnt much more than the factory claimed..

Nope, I got the actual mileage from Mapquest or similar site and used the difference from top-off to top-off filling up. Being a mathematician I know how to do **** right when it comes to calculations

I got 24mpg...so no reason to say anything because I'm not "pulling down the numbers"...

You could take off your needle on your speedo (cruising at 60mph) and pin it on 140mph while doing 60mph. It isn't going to change your odometer readings.

Im still using stock 3.08s so my odometer isnt off and have gotten 30mpg on the highway several times.

Getting an average of around 18mpg with my 4.10's, stock tire size, and gear-corrected speedo. I've never realy fully tested how many miles I can get on a tank, as I've made it a habit to refuel as soon as I get to 150 miles - my gas gauge has never worked as long as I've owned the thing, and I'm afraid of running dry (and burning up the pump).

The ultimate gas mileage beater, IMHO, is an early 90's Geo Metro with a 5-speed and a 3-cylinder. The early-early ones before the restyle and optional 4-cylinder came along would pull 52 MPG easily; my very first car was an '89 with a three-speed auto, and even that thing averaged 41 MPG no matter where/how I drove that turd. And tires for those pieces of crap are insanely cheap - $120 for a set of FOUR, installed, with warranty! You can find one on a corner or in the paper of any town at any given time for less than $1500 in decent shape. I'm just not keen on owning one because their major downfall is hitting anything on the road bigger than a cat (or another Geo Metro) will kill you, and the brakes on those crapboxes are pathetic.

Its pretty easy to check if your Odometer is calibrated, drive out on just about any major highway and look for the mile marker signs, you can check it every mile, but drive a good 20 miles or so and see how close you are.
