I really love that deep low growl of the Mustangs.. just wondering what years/trims have the best deepest growl? I'm comparing the regular GT to the Builtt, Mach 1, Cobra, etc.

One thing I hate about Corvettes is that they do not have that low deep growl mustang sound..

Depends on the exhaust. Generally I love the sound of a 4V w/ an x-pipe and magnapacks, but a 2V can sound really mean with a similar set-up too.

I'm talking more stock here...? I know aftermarket exhausts can change the sound quite a bit.. but I'm talking more stock here..

also, where does that low deep growl on the stock mustangs come from? is it the exhaust or headers? why don't the stock corvettes with an even bigger V8 sound this way?

They all sound pretty similar stock to me, from 5.0 Foxes to the modulars. The sound you're thinking of is caused by an O/R X-pipe for most cases.

I'd pick the 2- and 4-valve 4.6s for sounding the best, then the old 5.0. The 3V motors sound slightly different than the 2V and 4Vs and I don't like it as much.

The distinctive Mustang V-8 growl has a lot to do with firing order.

The firing order of the cylinders. Mustangs have a unique firing order.

I think the Bullitts are supposed to have the best exhaust sound, but anything stock is pretty tame. The supercharged cars have cool sounds though because of the blower whine.
