Whats the thing below the axle housing called?

What is the thing these cars have that has two bolts that go into the axle housing? It looks like some sort of balancer maybe? anyways, it looks like there are bushings inside and on one side the thing moves slow and looks good, but ont he other it has no resistance at all and is banging against the housing on large bumps. How can i fix this? (never seen this on a car before)

Its a rearend dampner i beleive, helps reduce vibrations, when i did my 8.8 rear end swap i didnt put it on, thing is actually really heavy.

Also known as the "dog bone."

It's a vibration damper. Lots of people say to get rid of it if installing an aluminum driveshaft. Others say to keep it if you install gears with the stoc kshaft.

err... It weighs 10-15 lbs, and you will drive the car for the rest of its life without it and without any problems...

Yeah but its 10-15 lbs on the axle. It can only help with traction.

Do you add weight to your trunk to increase traction? If so, there are better ways. If not, take off the dog bone, too.

it's totally useless, I could take it off your car in the middle of the night and you wouldn't know the next morning. I wouldnt spend a dime or an ounce of time fixing it.

Just because there isn't a perceived difference doesn't mean there isn't a difference.
