problems are getting worse with my 96 automatic. the whirring noise that gets louder when i step on the gas is still present. it seems to be coming from around the compressor. the noise is annoying but whats really worrying me is that the car's rpms have started to fluctuate when approaching 60. sometimes when taking off from a stop itll just sit there for a moment, revving up before taking off. this is a pita at stoplights and signs. at about 30mph, the revs jump around from about 1500 to 3500 till about i reach 60mph where they finally settle down to the usual 2000. i dont know what happens above 70 since i got caught speeding a 78 in a 50 and thats made me reluctant to do it again. also, sometimes the car seems to "come out of gear" for lack of better words. other times at a stop when i put it in drive on a slight decline, automatics are still supposed to move foward because of the idle. well sometimes this one will act like its in neutral and just start rolling backwards. i have to brake and make sure that the gear has "caught" before taking off. happens in reverse too. can anyone give me a general idea as to what might be wrong? any help would be appreciated. dont want to have to fork over lots of cash to fix this seeing as how i dont have much right now.

check to make sure your trans fluid is full... and check the color and smell of it too. if its a nasty brown color and smells 'burnt' then try having it flushed.
if topping off and/or flushing the fluid dosent help its probably time for a overhaul.
