just wondering if you guys change out the races when replacing wheel bearings. mine dont have any wear on them but i had a shop teacher say once to always change out races cuz they could have wear and wont match up with new bearings.
also what do shops charge to port and polish aluminum heads? thanks

Can you change the races? I only repacked the bearings a couple of times but I didn't really notice that the race could be removed. I was just installing whole new rotors anyway.

Not sure about the P&P on heads...

New rotors come with new races installed. When you buy the new bearings they come with races. If you have new rotors, you just throw the races away. Races can be knocked out and then installed with a seal and bearing driver.

The shop teacher said that partially for liability reasons. They could be held responsible if you did a half-assed job based on their advice or while in class. In practice, its ideal to replace the whole bearing assembly, but you can often get away without new races. I had a bad front bearing that didnt have enough time to to take the race with it. I just replaced the roller section and it was fine for three years/25,000 miles until I sold it last month. Do this at your own risk :D.

What aluminum heads are we talking about?

By me, a valve job, bowl cleanup, spring seat pressure job costs around $300, that' without porting and polishing, but that little work alone makes a major difference.

Porting will likely be $400+ even more on a cnc machine.

It's important to know what heads you are talking about. Because some are not cost effective to port, because you can sell them and buy better heads that make the same power without porting them.
If you don't have: Newer edelbrocks, afr's or twisted wedges, just sell the heads and buy one of these sets.

I made the mistake of getting myself Balls deep in a set of gt40y's, and wanted more power before they were even put on.
I put $450 into them, on top of $700 for the heads new. I could of just bought the damn wedges in the first place.

Have them valve jobbed, seat pressure done, and bowl work, that's all you need, unless you are running something 331 or larger.
This way the heads are completely checked before you put a set of heads with bent valves on your car, and it does happen.

Their is also factory imperfections and inconsistancies in NIB heads, that could be possible, and this would elimate that.
More than once has the head guy said the vavle guides were too tight, in head that weren't even run.
