Wheel Hop??

Alright, from my understanding wheel hop is only a issue with irs. Our cars have live axles.. why is this happening and how do I fix?? Lower control arms.. would that fix?? Does anyone else experience this so called wheel hop??

wheelhop has been an issue for years, and not just irs. i believe that lower control arms will help out. most people have the wheelhop. it is normal.

I dont know, mine seems to do it pretty bad. My entire dash inside my car feels like its going to break. I dont want it to keep doing it. My dash might start to come loose or start rattling and making noises. I will try and get lower control arms. I have never experienced this except when test driving the 03/04 cobras. I have had 5 mustangs in my lifetime, none have done these, and they were all live axles.

I went extreme and installed "Race" Lower Control Arms and I get wheelspin now since it was combined with my "Slam" Lowering Springs. The LCAs will almost remove all wheel hop unless you're dropping the hammer @ more than 3500rpm.

wheel hop is caused by the soft bushings flexing and the tired loading and unloading ..

replacing all your controll arms with poly bushed ones will fix 99 percent of it.

Hahahaha...that aint wheel-hop! You want wheel-hop try driving a leaf-sprung car...LOL!

Get hard bushings, no doubt. Stiffer springs will also help reduce the hop but at the price of launch-traction. So I'd keep the softer springs and get stiffer shocks.

Yo have no idea edbert .. these cars wheel hop as bad as any leaf spring car i ever drove when they are on a sticky track ..

your dash literaly feels like its goign to come off its violetn when you do it badly .

the bushings and the TALL radial tire with a stiff sidewall is also part of the problem

the tires unload when they start to spin .. then they grab due and this causes the hop then they unload again and it just gets worse and worse each time the cycle repeats.

controll arms totaly removed all of my wheel hop

installing stiffer shocks can and will hurt your 60 foot if your a true radial driver however on a slick it would actualy be benificial due to the tire having so much more grab and you then putting more down force into the tire after the initial bite.

Start with the third link first (upper control arm) It totally eliminated my wheelhop before I changed the LCA'S

I don't drive my 2005 that hard I guess, I have only seen significant hop with TCS off and a full blown drag race launch. Even in spirited stop light action I have not seen it at all, must be because I leave TCS on 99% of the time?

To be honest I think the rear axle on the 2005 is the most well hooked solid axle I've ever driven in any car period. I am continuously amazed at how well it stays planted in a variety of applications and a variety of conditions. The 2005 rear is better behaved than my 97 Cobra's was, that is for sure.

Be careful out there guys.. I've seen driveshafts break and trannies blow from wheel-hop / Axle-Tramp...
A broken driveshaft can do one heckuva lot of damage to both the car and you...

yep, I punched it in a parking lot on wet pavement and got wheel spin with the TCS off, then immediately tried on dry pavement and got wheel hop so I let off. I don't want wheel hop. I think I'll stick with traction control on.

guess you dont want to burn rubber then, do you? try to shift fast 1-2 and watch your car drop on its face for a split second, then pick up. the TCS also kills "spirited" stoplight driving if you shift fast. with TCS off, i can get 3rd gear scratch. no tune. with TCS on, it drops on its face, and you look like a "dummy"!

Well I've only had the car a week or so and haven't had a chance to really put it to the test. I don't want to tear anything up, and wheel hop really grates on the nerves. I did notice once that "falling on it's face" behavior you described when shifting fast with TCS on, but it only happened once, I couldn't make it happen again. All in all I'm extremely pleased with the performance. I drove a 4 cylinder turbo for 16 years prior to getting this baby. So anyway, bottom line, with TCS off, can you get a better 0-60 time? I don't care about burning rubber so much as getting to speed as quickly as possible.

What type of lower control arms do you guys recommend, also bushings? I have the same damn annoying problem

i recommend J&M LCAs. HotPart Suspension Products they have a unique 3 piece bushing that is quiet and reduces deflection better.

A friend of mine has an 04 Cobra which I know has the IRS, but he was experiencing some wheel hop and the solution that worked for him was to put some air bladders inside the springs and I believe he put 3 to 4 pounds of air in them and it fixed his wheel hop problem. Don't remember where he got the rubber bladders though. If anyone is interested in pursuing this option I can try to find out where he purchased the air bladders. Let me know.

Eibach has those bladders in their drag launch springs. Don't know if they can be purchased seperately.
