Why do people put "no test drives". Doesn't make sense to me! i get you don't want a bunch of random people driving it, but who buys a car without driving it first??? have you ever bought a car without a test drive, or refused to let people test drive? Thoughts?

I'm looking at 60's Mustangs lately and I'm seeing a lot of "No Joy Rides" in the ads.

Show up pre-approved and you would be amazed how many test drives you can go on.

It's a buyers market, if I do that and it turns out to be a POS then it's a ding on my credit and no sweat of his back. Then If that happens twice! My credit score is lowering because of inquiries! Now if I knew it was a great car I wouldn't see the problem, but I've dealt with too many liars to trust people from the start.

I think people do this for 2 reasons, One the car is a pos and they are hiding something, or it is really nice and they have had too many people show up and want a joyride and then not make an offer or low ball them. Typically if you have cash in hand and can show you are serious you can usually end up test driving the car. If they say no test drives and when you arrive they already have the car running that is usually a tell tale sign they don't want you to know something. Either way if they are serious about selling a car they have to allow a test drive at some point. I personally would never buy a car without driving it, unless i was gonna completely tear it down and restore it. Thats just my two cents tho

I bought my 98 cobra w/o test driving it but I checked everything. So I new it was good after checking oil cap, air pulling a bit in, checking for any noises, tires like that

I will say this: when I put my old mustang up for sale I stated "no test drives". The reason for doing so is because the car was my baby... I put a ton of money and blood sweat and tears into it...

It made 425 rwhp and 435 rwtq to the tires. I wasn't motivated to sell it. I asked a premium and the dude who ended up buying it was actually an old subordinate of mine before he got out of the Air Force.

I took him for a ride, showed him what the car can do, and on the way back, I asked him if he wanted to drive it...

He declined. He didn't want to be responsible for wrecking my car.

My worst nightmare would have been some random d-bag showing up, asking to drive it, and wrapping it around a pole with me in it.

I may be the exception, but I told him flat out what can be improved, what will fail in the future (hence what to improve), what I wanted to do to it and why I thought is was more practical to sell it at a premium and use that $ for a down payment on a '15 gt w/ perf pack, rather than spend 20k on the motor, fuel system, drive train, etc... I also warned him that the motor is living on the edge. It's on borrowed time as it is and if he were to turn the boost up, it would put a window in the block.

I still talk with him and already told him that if he ever feels like selling it to let me know first.

Selling that car was hard pill to swallow. So... In defense of the person who says "no test drives", maybe the car means a lot to the seller and it may be 'too fast' for the 'tire kicker'.

With that being said; some sellers are crooked and want to off load some junk on an unsuspecting buyer. Choose your poison.

When I sold my 2003GT, it was new enough that younger people still wanted it, and could afford it.

Anyway, I'm convinced the first few people who showed up just wanted to go rip around in it. This car was a 9.5 out of 10 conditionwise and right after the test drive the excuses would come up. "Well, not sure I want a silver car". Gee...thanks for wasting my time.

I put no test drives, and yes it did cut down on the number of people who came out, but the people who did seemed more genuinely into the car. If I felt they were a serious buyer, I'd offer to let them drive it.

Not a curb, they hit a light pole. Going way to fast in a 35 mph zone.

The way that passenger side is caved in...right in front of the seat. Was the salesmen sitting there? Did he survive? Rough.

He received multiple fractures to both legs. They say it will be June sometime before he can walk again.
