When did the HO motors come out, when were they available and did the Mustang come in either flavor. HO or not HO. I have my Haynes Mustang 79 thru 92 manual and they have both specs for both motor, so I am not sure what year the HO motor was available for the Mustang.

The reason why I am asking is because I am looking at a used motor to purchase and the person selling either a 302 from a 85 and or 87 Mustang is telling me that neither motor did not come with a roller cam and lifters???

Thanks for the help.

84-85 was HO as well..I beleive the 5-spds got them only.

If you are talking EFI HO, then that's 86+ Mustang/Mark7

And 85 HO and 87 Mustang both came with roller cam and lifters. In fact, they use the same camshaft. Even the standard output 5.0 was roller cam by 86 i beleive. Maybe earlier.

Sounds like he doesn't know what he has. Ask him for the block casting number down by where the driver's side header would hang by the rear of the block. Should help narrow down a year range

Yes the 85 and 87 were both roller cam engines. Matter of fact, the '85 was the first year for the roller cam 5.0.

The "High Output" (H.O.) 5.0L came out in '82 and lasted through '95. During those 14 years, there was a H.O. 5.0L and there was a S.O. (standard output) 5.0L. Individual F/L/M vehicle in any particualr year got one or the other, but not both.

The H.O. 5.0L was the only 5.0L in:
'82-'86 Capri*
'82-'95 Mustang*
'84-'85 LTD*
'85 Marquis*
'87-'92 Mark VII
'91-'93 Cougar
'91-'93 Thunderbird
* AOD-equipped models in '84 and '85 got a H.O 5.0L with fuel injection (CFI) and a lower HP/torque rating, late '85 blocks were roller capabale but had flat-tappet cams/lifters

'85 4V (Capri/Mustang only), and '86 and later EFI had roller cam/lifters
