I was told the other day it should be changed every 25000 miles. That seems a bit too often. Is there an official change interval?

according to ford, its every 100,000 miles unless there is a leak or the axle was submerged in water. if you pound your gears really badly you may want to do it at like 75,000 bc im sure there are metal shavings in there from your ring and pinion being beat to crap

When you blow an axle JK, I think it more depends on how hard you are on the car. If its driven normally you should never have to change it. But if you race the car alot like me maybe every 25k-50k

That is a bit too often...unless you're Bill Putnam or Jon Force. So Unless you race your car HEAVILY during the track seasons, there is no reason to change it that often. Although it definately wouldn't hurt to do it that often. A lot of people recommend that ywhen you do your 60,000 mile checkup and change the trans fluid, spark plugs, wires, flush the radiator, change the oil, check the tires, etc etc...then THAT is a good time to do the differential fluid as well.

This guy also said to use friction modifier when you change it. Is that needed?

Yes you need friction modifier. I got Royal Purple 75W140 synthetic which comes with a limited slip additive in its formula.

Well here is what the parts guy will tell you.... well one that knows what he is talking about.....

You should use a gasket, get a good felpro one. Use anarobic gasket tack on the cover side to tack the gasket in place, let dry for a min or two. Than bolt her up. If you do it this way you can remove the cover a few times before the gasket is runed. This makes for easy fluid changes if you race alot.

Now on a further note:

When you change your gear set brake them in by driving 20min over 55, let cool for an hour, than drive over 55 for another 20min than let cool for another hour, than you can drive normally for the next 2 or 3 weeks, after than change out the fluild again to remove any metal shavings from brake in, and double check your play in the gears.
I personally prefer Mobile 1 Gear lube.... it is really great stuff. Than I use just a good quality friction mod. with it. And really I would change every 75-100k miles.... but I would also go and replace all the seals at the same time.
