Anyone know where i can buy a helmet for going to the track with? I went to wal-mart and couldn't find one, also went to academy and no dice...I really don't want to have to order one off the internet...

Anyone?

Be sure you buy an SA2005 helmet, this is the requirement for the track. If you plan to run faster than 10's, you should read the rules more closely.

I bought my helmet from here: http://www.gforceoutlet.com/

The flaws are only cosmetic, but you can save 100$ or more. If it were a flaw in construction or saftey, the helmet would obviously be scrapped, as it is a huge liablity. When I recieved my hemet, the only flaw was that one of the stickers had shifted about 1/8" after applying it. Literally, I saved 100$ just for that slight flaw.

worst advice ever. motorcycle helmets are not rated for automotive use. if the SA2005 certification is not there, a track can disallow you from running. usually you can still get away with SA2000, ive been to track days where people are turned away without refund due to not having a proper helmet.

i got mine from www.subesports.com

Not necessarily the worst advice...hah... Alot of NHRA drag strips allow Snell M rated helmets.

IMO I would go on Simpson, or Bell's websites and search for a local dealer and go try on a bunch of different race helmets. I myself have an open face MAG-4 from Bell, I like it!

My helmet I bought used for $20 on eBay, and it's Snell 90, which is the minimum requirement for Milan. It's ok, gets me down the track just fine, but it makes me look like a Spaceball.

Stop the madness!!
Do not buy a helmet at Wal-Mart for crying out loud.
There are basically 2 type sof helmets,
#1. SA rated by the Snell foundation for use in automotive applications, the interior will be fire resistant nomex or pbi.
#2. A Snell rated "M" helmet for use on motorcycles and go-kart applications, esseintially the same quality as the automotive helmet but without the fire resistant liner.

Any helmet that does not have a Snell rating is ****zit, including all of the DOT crap that is out there (some have DOT and Snell ratings).

As far as used helmets go, don't buy one of them either because you don't know if it has been dropped or damaged, and, if the helmet is over 5 years old it needs to be thrown out anyway because the fiberglass (or composite) is starting to get brittle.

Most real racing organizations require a SA helmet less than 5 years old to participate.

http://www.racerwholesale.com/

is a good place to start, like Bill Simpson once said, "If you have a 50 dollar head, buy a 50 dollar helmet". So if you want to save money, do it somewhere else besides on a safety item.

sorry but if you're racing a daily driver, and you have airbags, any full face, head helmet will work, even those from Wally World.

however if you don't have an airbag, then I recommend a Snell rated racing helmet, but most people don't own 7, 8, 9, 10 second drag cars with no airbags, that they haul around on a trailer, that pull insanely fast times at warp speed.

I beg to differ, what does an air bag have to do with anything? An airbag is a "supplemental" restraint system, they also (mostly) only work in frontal impacts. They were never designed to replace seatbelts, and there is plenty of things, like the B post, to hit your head on besides a steering wheel in a frontal impact. Not all cars wreck head on, some go sideways into retaining walls.
Most of our cars are well capable of 100 mph trap speeds even in stock form.

That is the most RETARDED thing I have ever heard. A motorcycle helmet can be used for any application, including automotive use. All semi-new Shoei helmets are SNELL and DOT certified, both of which meet the standards for track racing. Now if you aren't using a full-face style helmet, obviously it shouldn't be used on the track, and it probably won't meet NHRA requirements.

sorry, i dont pay attention to NHRA regs, only what the rules regarding the specific open track group i am going with. they tend to have much higher safety requirements. when i say track, i mean open track road course, not a drag strip.
